I bought this lense because it was more economic than others, but for some reason I cant seem to get a picture out of it that is crisp..... I cannot focus this thing and it is driving me crazy. I've tried both manual and auto and my pictures are fuzzy..... Am i blind???

could you post one you think its not crisp? i am a nikonian and my 50mm1.8d is my favorite lens for low light and sharpness of the photos it produced. if you are still under warranty send it back to cannon maybe a lens element is loose or out of wack.(scientific term!!!)

Okay... Here is a couple I took earlier today. When I looked in my viewfinder they seemed focused. But it has happened other times too. Could it be because I am too close?? I havent done any PP

Try setting the aperture to 4.0 or 5.6. I had the same problem with my 50mm 1.8 and eventually sold it and bought a 50mm 1.4. The smaller aperture should give you a sharper picture. Also, watch your shutter speed. Make sure it is fast enough to avoid camera shake.

What were the settings on the pictures? I think you're using a wide aperture (smaller number) which results in a small focus area. The passenger side headlight seems nice and sharp.

Try using the DOF preview button when you are looking through the viewfinder. This lets you see what the picture will look like when snapped. If you don't like it, increase the F number and try it again.

The Depth Of Field Preview button is located on the front of the camera just below the lens release button.

I hate admit it, but one time, I attached a lens on my camera, but didn't completely engage it (the lens didn't click into place). The result was the auto focus didn't work. When I was taking pictures, I didn't even notice whether the subject was in focus until later when I was reviewing the shots. I mention this because the focal point of your photos seems to be closer than the car. It's hard to tell though...just a thought.

hello Sherrie,
One of my (many, many, many) mistakes was in not checking the diopter, As a result I thought focus was sharp when it was not.

also i know this is a basic question but having done this mistake and feeling like a schmuck afterwards i gotta ask, what apeture were you shooting at? you know the smaller the fstop number the smaller the depth of field right? very cool car. reminds me of the one in American Graffitti.

Was shot at f/3.2 1/800.

I've tried to use it before and on automatic I will have it focused and then go to take the pic and it will reset the focus in the middle of the shot. In manual I think I have it focused accurately and press shutter and I can hear it happening too. I think it might have a problem because I have never taken an even halfway decent pic with it.... (wasnt there just a link about the top excuses photographers give for bad photos?)lol

might be too small an apeture for the dof you needed.
