Have wanted to get some good black and whites. Saw a few mixed in at a wedding for display and loved them. So gave it a shot this mothers day. feel free to help. Thanks, Dave
The first photo is out of focus, the focus appears to be on the boys shoulder/ For that reason I go with Photo #2. Depending your personal taste, can use some PP work, not much by my eyes, but can use a little more contrast and clarity and brightening on them to help bring them forward. Otherwise both make a good photo for pose and DOF.
Black & white works on these. But I think if you'd gone for a little more depth of field - around 5.6 or more - mom's face would have been sharper. The first shot was not sharply in focus at all. The poses are nice though.

Since you enjoy pp, maybe go "artsy" with the out of focus #1 - painting effects, for example.
#2 is very pleasing - a sweet baby with loving mom, who has a very engaging smile :)
