Broken Nikon - Broken Heart

Been planning our 3 week European vacation for two years. Today is the second full day in London. Wonderful day shooting at Hampton Court with my new Tokina 11-16 on my D5100. On the train back to London my D5100 slid off my lap and landed hard on the floor. Tried a test shot - most of image black except for very small strip at top of frame. Figured mirror mechanism damaged. Moved lever to go into live view mode. Got an error message to press the shutter button. Mirror lockup greyed out. Attached are a couple of pics. It looks like there is a gap on the right side. Is it repairable?

Regardless of whether it can eventually be repaired, It looks like I am going to have to get something (D5100 - D5300) tomorrow in London to use for the rest of my trip. Anyone ever had to buy cameras here - know of a reputable Nikon dealer?

If I remember correctly Tottenham Court Road had a lot of gadget shops. As an American taking goods out of the EU you probably can claim the VAT back if you buy something in the UK, however prices tend to be £1 = $1 so probably cheaper to buy a replacement in the USA. Maybe a used nikon might be a better option.

There is a cluster of camera shops in the westend of london, which doesn't surprise me as the top specialist developing and printing places were based there.

here's a list of Central London camera shops retrieved via google maps that might be useful. I can't vouch for any of them thou.

Sorry to hear that - definitely puts a damper on things.

Check with the hotel concierge - might luck out and find a photo enthusiast.

Also, KEH has a couple of D5100's - might check that out if you're looking to replace and check FEDEX for overnight to your hotel.

Good luck...

Getting late here - thanks for the suggestions and list of possible repair/retail shops. I've emailed a couple to see if there is any hope of a one-day repair tomorrow. If not I will probably head over to Grays of Westminster.

If you are planning on a Nikon product, remember that buying internationally may create warranty problems for you when you return to the US. You may be able to get two day shipping option, delivered to your hotel from a US authorized Nikon distributor. Otherwise, I would rent a camera for your remaining time in London and make a purchase when you return to the US. If other hoggers have suggestions regarding Nikon warranty peculiarities with international purchases, please chime in.

Way off. Today the exchange rate is 1 pound = $0.65 and if you pay with a CC may be a bit worse.

You missed my point take 2 items 1 priced at say $200 in the USA typically the price will be £200 sterling in the UK or roughly $307

It's even worse in Ireland Tesco's for example puts euro and sterling prices on clothes e.g £5 = €7.50 about 5 years back the euro and sterling were 1 to 1 causing a lot of irritation (currently €1 ~ £0.85). Market pricing you have to love it or put up with it anyway.

Apologies, I misunderstood. Thought you were meaning the exchange rate.

quite alright i didn't make myself clear enough. Hate these 'market' prices as it often feels like your being ....

e.g
The canon pro100 seems like a nice printer available for next to nothing in the USA but much more expensive everywhere else.
