I am preparing some images for monochrome competitions and have the choice between using Topaz B&W Effects or NIK's Silver Efex Pro for the conversion and creative effects. They both seem pretty good to me but what's the take on which is better to use?

If you want to see the difference, go to this topic, page 2. I converted a color photo to monochrome using both products. I much prefer Silver Efex.

SEP worked great but you compared to onOne B&W not Topaz B&W, which has an updated version with brushes and masks that permits it to do things that previously could be done only in NIK's SEP.

Oops! You're exactly correct. And since I already owned both, I took a pass when it came to Topaz B&W. I've been a NIK fan for many years, and like to use software with which I am quite familiar.

I have Topaz and NIK. I favor NIK.

I've tried Nik and Topaz....I usually like Topaz products over Nik software...but in this case I go with Silver Effex Pro all the way.

But my best Black & Whites have all come from Lightroom 5....they come out much more natural with a great tonal range.
IMHO

I also prefer SEP 2 over Topaz BW Effects.

Both work very well but I tend to like the interface for SEP 2.
