only one problem with you reasoning, 5D doesnt have an in camera flash, like the 7D, 60D, T3...so the OP will have to have a transmitter and reciever, so 2 PW's in order to wirelessly fire the flash, or use the other various wireless systems out there. See web site "lightenupandshoot". I use the cowboy studios wireless triger system.

1. You can use the on camera flash and the 580 as a slave. The camera flash will fire the 580. You need to aim the flash receiver at the camera.

2. I think the 5D is a wireless camera. You will need a pocket wizard receiver (or similar) for the 580 to fire it without the camera flash.

3. If the camera is not wireless, you will also need a transmitter to place on the hotshoe.

It all depends on budget. Be careful one things always seems to lead to another. A cheap ettl cable will do the trick to start if you only have one flash. It's good because you can still control the flash power from the back of your camera.

Also, your 580exII can act as a master. You can purchase a 430exII and fire it using the line of sight ettl control from your camera with the 580 in the hotshoe. The 508exII can fire several slaves and control their output form your camera.

If you are shooting static subjects you can purchase a cheap flash trigger. I have a set of Pixel Soldiers I use and they only cost about $75.00. The work well and are easy to use. The only difficult part is learning how to use the manual controls on your remote flash because the the cheaper triggers are not ettl. It's really not hard to learn if you don't already know. I've seen how to lessons on Kelby Training and Adorama.

Yes, you could buy an Off Camera ETTL Cord for Canon to control the 580EXII from the camera. Flash Zebra carries a longish one that would do:

Hello Melvin Short & Group,

I rarely mention camera stores but Midwest Photo sell an inexpensive radio transmitter/receiver set called "Cactus." I think the basic kit comes with the transmitter and two receivers and sell for about $50.00. They work GREAT!!! This would give you room to grow into using more than 1 flash. I use them primarily for hummingbirds and use as many as 6 flashes and allow two folks to capture images at the same time. See example. By the way, I haven't found any other sources that sell the cactus wireless.

Have fun, because that's what its all about, and remember: the f/stops here!!!

For the price, I have to buy this.
Have a few Vivitar 285's I can use and won't have to rely on the IR from my Nikon CLS set-up.

GoofyNewfie is showing you exactly what I was talking about including the source where to but it. They may be used with any flash that has a hotshoe connection.

Have fun and remember the f/stops here!

Melvin, You'd have to get the Canon ST E-2 Transmitter http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=&N=4291570227+4289244510&A=endecaSearch&ci=1&Q=

Bruce, the phottix looks interesting too.

they sure don't give this stuff away. transmitter is about half the cost of the flash. it would be easier to buy if I knew what I was doing?... my wife is sure I need "professional" help and not the photo kind.

Maybe it's just me, but I've found that in photography, there are no simple solutions. I buy a piece of equipment and then find that I have to buy another to get it to work.

Which is why I named my point and shoot camera "Barbie". Just like the doll, it required lots of additions.

Melvin,

We have found you can not mix strobes. I use 4 to 6 inexpensive Sunpak strobes. The trick is they must have manual settings as your Vivitar does. The 285, as you have, works great. The strobes must also be in the lowest power setting so they recycle immediately. On June 30th I'm doing a free workshop at Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge in New Mexico. Why not come and enjoy?

Remember the f/stops here!

My best, J. Goffe
