On July 30 the 89th Annual Chincoteague Island Pony Swim will take place. This is a several day event and is used to control the size of the wild horse population on Assateague and Chincoteague Islands.

I spotted this group of ponies just before a storm rolled in. Used my trusty SX50 at max range to get the photo.

Some explanation, please? It sounds like they make the ponies swim so they can drown some of them to control the population. There must be a different explanation, though. I hope.

No other explanation. That's what they do.
Kidding. They are rounded up and auctioned.

The round up was made famous in the movie "Misty of Chincoteague". The ponies are rounded up and auctioned for the benefit of the island volunteer fire department.

No Jerry....they just cull the herd. Many years ago, we bought a raffle ticket where the winner won the first pony....cannot imagine what we would have done if we had been the lucky winner....this is a wonderful place to visit, along with Assateaque Island. We have spent several weeks during the summer camping on the dunes.
