An interview with gene McKinnon,

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
50+ years, last 20 as a serious photographer. Inherited passion for photography from my mother.

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
Took numerous college courses over past 20 years. Right now I am concentrating on Wildlife photography which is all new to me but fun learning.

3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
Light, composition and a keen eye!

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? Can you walk us through it?
Canon 20D, yes I still use it on occasion, 18-55 lens. No special setup was required, composition was there for the taking.

5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
Minor post processing on most images, burn/dodge, exposure, etc.

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
David DuChemin,Michael Freeman and Pablo Picasso for all the "strange" stuff I like to photograph.

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
For this photograph, no probably not. I find that 2nd and 3rd tries on a photograph seem to lack that "moment in time" quality that is there on the first go around.

8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
How subjective art is...Just because I like something doesn't mean someone else will have the same feeling about it. Took me many years and many hard knocks to learn this lesson!

9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
A user friendly camera bag. Still looking for it, must be out there somewhere!

10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
I like my 70-200mm and 10-20mm but think for all around I would choose a 17-70mm or something around that range.

11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?
Cheap white umbrella for diffusion on flowers and a couple remote flashes just in case I need more than natural light to accent a subject.

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
Cannot imagine life without photography but I would probably be a painter.

13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?
Taking photographs at a remote mining town I tied my 75lb. dog's lease to my belt. When deer bolted from the doors and windows of a cabin I was photographing my dog couldn't resist going on the chase and yes, dragging me behind. Needless to say I missed the shot but learned a valuable lesson about the nature of dogs.

14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
Not at the moment, in between web-sites, should have a new one soon, I hope.

15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
"Keep shooting".

I'M NOW 80. I STARTED WHEN I WAS 13. IT HAD BEEN MY FATHER'S HOBBY

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
NO FORMAL TRAINING. MOSTLY LANDSCAPES, CANDIDS OR PATTERNS.

3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO SAY. IT'S CAPTURING THAT PARTICULAR 1/100 OF A SECOND.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? Can you walk us through it?
JUST A GRAB SHOT WITH MY CANON REBEL

5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
I TWEAK THINGS IN PHOTOSHOP...OFTEN PLAY WITH VARIOUS EFFECTS

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
JUST A GRAB SHOT OF MY GRANDDAUGHTER

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
IN MANY CASES I WOULD SAY YES. HERE NO. IT WAS ONE OF THOSE LUCKY MOMENTS. I PROBABLY CROPPED IT AND MADE SOME MINOR ADJUSTMENTS BUT Ii FORGET

8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
YOU DON'T NEED A LOT OF GADGETS

9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
POLARIZER

10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
MAYBE THE OLD RAZOR SHARP XENAR ON MY NOW MOTHBALLED ROLLEIFLEX

11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?
SOMETIMES A CLIP ON FLASH

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?

13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?
NOTHING I CAN RECALL OFFHAND

14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
ON FLICKR UNDER "'DICK SMYTH" ALSO VIDEO ON YOUTUBE UNDER "RPS19"

15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
SHOOT TO SATISFY YOURSELF. IF SOMEBODY ELSE LIKES IT, SO MUCH THE BETTER. TRY TO GET IT RIGHT IN THE VIEWFINDER RATHER
THAN THINK ABOUT THE POST PROCESSING WHILE YOU'RE SHOOTING. LEARN AND UNDERSTAND THE BASICS.

An interview with Scoutman,

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
When I was in the US Army, a buddy was into photography and his work was quite good. I purchased my first camera at the PX while in that environment.

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
I've taken a lot of advanced multi-day workshops. I like to find abstract elements in ordinary things.

3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
Something that captures a decisive moment, ala Henri Cartier Bresson (sp?). A picture that shows something no one has ever seen before in that particular subject.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? Can you walk us through it?
I used a Canon SX30IS. In the late morning, I went to the kitchen to make breakfast and saw the subject smoking outside the sliding glass door. The condensation on the glass, the green glass, and the bare torso, together formed the basis for a great picture. I rushed to get my camera before the mood changed and the condensation evaporated.

5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
I use Picasa to review everything. I like its straightening, darkening, sharpening, and saturation tools. Occasionally, I will go to Smart Photo Editor or a similar program to add a special effect.

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
a. Ernst Haas, who I met at a workshop shortly before he died. Prior to that, I had seen and was impressed by his work for Life (NYC in color), Marlboro, and his published books. I've also been influenced by workshop instructors Sam Abel, Harvey Lloyd, and Freeman Patterson. I love the work of Pete Turner, as well.
b. I saw a decisive moment.

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
No. I took enough shots and knew that one of them would turn out to be what I envisioned.

8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
How a single lens reflex camera can enhance your creative ability, through its previewing and other features.

9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
A circular polarizing filter. I have one for each of my cameras/lenses.

10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
A bridge camera covers most of the situations you face in photography. They continue to get better and will surpass the DSLR for all but special work.
I have a Canon 60D, and choose either the 60mm f/2.8 or a 10-20mm wide angle for outings when that is my camera of choice. The 60 is great for close-ups, of course, and is also a good portrait lens. I love super wide angle work for the creative distortions it can bring and also for its everything in focus capabilities.

11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?
Only the pop-up flash that is on the camera. If I plan to shoot portraits or people, I have a portable reflector set I would take. I always have a reflective surface like mirror or aluminum foil in my backpack for lighting situations that need some manipulation of light.

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
I have a color printer with copying capability. I would take magazine ads and other pictorial stuff and manipulate it on the surface of the copier. Good for doing selfies as well.

13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?
I had spent the day at a local chili cook-off, taking photographs of interest and lots of people shots. As I was leaving, I was accosted by one of the organizers, who accused me of taking inappropriate pictures of children. He was given this information by a woman who informed him of the fact. Heresay. He had two cops with him. I refused to show him my pictures, as was my right - I think I had one or two pics of kids that day - but the police escorted me out of the area. Outside, the demanded to see my ID. I should have refused on the basis of my First Amendment right to photograph any thing in public. I now carry a laminated copy of the ACLU statement of the rights of photographers.
I've also been harassed by security at bus terminals, claiming that photography is forbidden by the Patriot Act. Not true. The Act says nothing about photography.

14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
Some of my best stuff is posted at 72dpi under the alias of "fredernail."

15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
a. Always carry a camera (and that ACLU card).
b. Take workshops that allow you to improve your skills, learn and be stimulated by others in the class, and immerse yourself in photography in a great location like Maine.
