An unusual problem: I shoot macro with a Nikon D300 and D800 and often stack multiple images to maximize depth of field. Using a Tokina 100mm F2.8 Macro lens, and tethering software (ControlMyNikon) with the D300 I am able to take advantage of the software's stacking feature while allows one to determine how many images are to be taken while automatically focusing at predetermined intervals on the subject. Works great! Set it, walk away, and come back later to collect the images.
The D800, using the same software and same lens will, focus on a predetermined point but then fails to focus automatically to create a stack.
The Software developer thinks it may have something to do with the way the Tokina lens controller chip communicates (or fails to communicate with the camera body. He suggests I use a Nikkor lens to keep compatibility to a maximum. A good idea, but right now the D800 is away for a warranty repair.
So far, Nikon is willing only to refer me to the user's manual. A waste of time!
Since I know that the lens works on the D300 body, I have to either assume (maybe incorrectly) that the issue is either with the software or some difference in how the D800 handles auto focus when in tether mode as compared to the D300.
Incidentally, the lens autofocuses on either camera body, if not tethered to a computer.
Anyone have an idea of what is happening here.
