Thinking of getting a Windows laptop to process imagery. Have heard much about these dual corps memories. Apple's tech is great but so costly, once u get all the extras that are inclusive in the Windows environment for far less.

Dual core what? There is dual channel memory and dual core processors. Photo editing is not nearly as resource intensive as video editing. The weak spot will mostly likely be the screen on your laptop. Would suggest spending a few bucks for an IPS monitor. Once you go with a dual screen set up, you want want to go back.

If you are looking....Check out ones with the Intel Core i5 or i7 processors...these same processors are offered in some Macs and are very good for photo processing and storage,

What is an IPS monitor?

I have relatively new 17.3" laptop with Intel Core i7 processor. But I realized I can't do any post proc. work on my photos other than crop. Because the monitor moves, it changes the hue, tone, contrast, etc. of my photos. I'm just never sure about the angle so all post proc. is done on my desk top.

I hear you! I NOW have an IPS (LG LED from Bestbuy) display for my desktop which I bought to go along with my newest desktop computer. It has made a world of difference in my editing and I can get almost a perfect match from what I see on my display with printing from local labs and over the net websites. For years I struggled with the TN panels bad shifting of color and printing that did not match.
If anyone knows about a good laptop with an IPS display I would like to know about it! I am still searching. I am also still searching for a tablet with a readable full size SD card .
I wish computer companies would advertize the type of screen their computers offer instead of ambiguious description such as "super bright" etc.

thanks! I looked for an HP one and the sales department ( HP) said they didn't have any with IPS. I just realized that the HP ones on that link are from the Business department ( workstations) so I guess that is what you have to pay for to get a good one? No I can't justify spending twice the money for the sake of a screen that should only cost maybe $200 more . Thanks, I will check out each one on that link.
The tablets usually have ips displays but just don;t handle the rest of what I need :0(

I've always had great luck with HP's...You didn't state your budget so I will just recommend getting at least a 15.6" screen model. The 17's can be cumbersome, but thats your preference.
Also get a minimum of a high end dual core processor or ultimately a quad core processor(depending on budget.) The Intel i5 and i7's are great processors, but the AMD Phenomx4 line of quad cores are quite good and are less expensive than Intel.
Get 4 gigabites of DDR3 Ram, with at least a 500gb SATA hard drive.
Naturally you'd want Windows 7(in a 64 bit environment) and the "Pro" version allows you to run most of the older software. Most all new laptops have built in memory card readers, so you will be all set.
If you have any concerns give me a shout. Good Luck

you guys are great with advice- thanks. I have now i7 2600 ( sandybridge ) , 4 core, bluray- high end graphics card ( hdmi out), 460 watts to substain it and windows 7 professional 64 bit. No solid state, opted for the 1.5TB (7200 rpm) ( 8 G RAM)and it SCREAMS! I have no problem with freezing or crashes with editing eaven on huge raw and tiff files will lots of editing even with multiple windows open and running multiple apps . HD video- same way-never boggs down like previous computers. My laptop is close to it but smaller HD and of course the bad tn panel. I paid just over$1000 for my laptop and would bewilling to pay more for the ips screen if I could find one. However, $2000 seems out of line.
Again thanks - I will keep that list to review

finds that very encouraging.....don't do a lot of photo processing, just "trim the back & sides" maybe a little off the top
