Coindre Hall

Below are three photos taken on the grounds of Coindre Hall in Huntington, NY. Here is the website if you wish to read the history of it http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coindre_Hall
In the first photo I attempted to capture the view from the back of the Hall. The structure you see is the boathouse, which is abandoned. There is also a small lighthouse in the background. The photo was cropped.
The second photo was a desire to show a tight crop of the Hall contrasted against the sky. This photo was not cropped.
The third photo was a try at conveying nature using man made structures to survive and thrive. I realize some of the leaves are "soft" but felt it did not detract from the photo. Tell me if you feel it does. This photo was not cropped.
All photos were shot with a Nikon D80 and Nikkor 18-135 DX Zoom with an ISO of 400. Comments and Critique always welcomed.

I very much like #1 and #3. I do not think the soft edge takes away from the 3rd shot. It is pleasing to the eye. I would also very much like to see the boathouse in other perspectives

I love the colors and contrast in all of them. the composition looks strong. thumbs up.

These images have the look and feel of a photographer who knew the area and subject matter; took time to compose what at the time seemed to be the right angle and frame; took his time and told a story.
Good Job!
#3 had you kept the camera parallel to the vine it could have/would have all been sharp --- all the way down --- and that lack of sharpness kills the image

On image 3, the focus directs your eye. Which is what I would want to happen. My one question how much did you play with Saturation or Contrast. A lighter touch might not be bad is my only comment. Very Nice and it looks like this is very definitely worth a PT Jeff ferry ride! Thanks

Thanks for your compliment and critique Docrob. I think I will try and crop the third image, thus removing the last leaf. Actually, the first and last leaf. I read somewhere that odd numbered subjects are generally more pleasing to the eye than even. Just another "rule of thumb" I guess. I didn't realize that having the camera parallel to the subject increases sharpness. It makes sense. Thanks for the tip! :)

Thanks Roger. I did play with saturation and contrast, but actually not sure how much :oops: I never record the numerical amounts I change, just laziness and time constraints. If you do take that ferry ride you might want to wait till it warms up a bit and feel free to PM me if you do. I would give you a list of other places close to the Hall you might want to visit.
