Where to position for soccer

Been shooting my granddaughters soccer (U11) and always seem to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. What is a good position on the field. I have a Canon 7D with a Sigma 70-200 f2.8 DG HSM OS or Sigma 150-500 f5 DG HSM OS. I have used the 70-200 but have yet to use the 150-500(just got it Friday). Thanks in advance.

It always helps to anticipate where the play is going to be when photographing sports.

Does your granddaughter play offense, midfield, or defense? That might dictate where to position yourself, to some extent.

I shot several college women's soccer games a couple years back when a friend of our family played for Cal. I used my 70-200L and 300L, with and without a 1.4x. I moved around quite a bit, and tried to capture the action as much as I could. Maybe these will give you some ideas:

My preferred spot is on the end line on what ever side of the goal is the least dominate side for the offense. That way the offensive players are always coming toward me.

That said I do move around a fair amount in sort of an L pattern between the end line and the side line. The length of your lens also matters, the longer the lens (I shoot with a 4 or 500mm lens) the more I like the end line.

Thanks for the replies, I have heard that sitting by one of the corners is a good spot, I guess that would be by the end line. My granddaughter is the goalie, so she doesn't move around much, but I do like to get shots of the other girls as well.

I photographed a lot of goal action in a couple of the games I covered.

From the near sideline (about halfway between the midfield stripe and the goal), you should be able to get "action shots" of her defending the goal, and when she clears the ball.

I was shooting my daughter's game last weekend. What I do is roam up and down the sideline depending what side of the field she is playing on. The only bad part last week was that there was a parking lot in the background of most of my shots. The other sideline is restricted to the players and coaches and most referees won't let spectators stand behind the goal.
