How serious do you want to be about photography? What is your budget?

Cameras have many different features, are of different qualities, and run the range of a hundred dollar to several thousand dollars.

I do some art and have some limited experience at this. Your lighting and wh balance are important. Out side works good if you shoot with light source at right angle to the painting. If you seal your painting take the pic first, and do not put glass on it first. Also set the painting straight not at a angle. I had good luck with Canon xs10. I now have a xsi. Light glare is most common problem.

From what I see you will do well with a quality point and shoot!

I took some great pictures of my husband's latest painting with our Canon Power Shot SX 30. The pictures taken outside were the best.

One of our photo club members is also an award winning painter. He uses a point and shoot. He did an interesting program about how he can use artist's license to change things that distract in the photo or add things that enhance the painting.

I'd recommend the Canon PowerShot S95
This is a very popular point and shoot camera that offers excellent image quality, and also gives you the ability to shoot 720p HD videos. Low light performance is also adequate, though the battery life could be better. The design is pretty compact, but this makes it a little difficult to grip properly. Nevertheless, the 10MP resolution, the 3.0 inches LCD screen and the ton of features available make this a worthy choice. At $449, this camera may be slightly pricey, but its quality is unquestionable.
