My Nikon won't come back...it's a D60

Was planning a trip and thought I'd give the battery a full charge. However, for the first time, the camera refuses to fire up.

I called the Nikon 1800 and they want it back. No diagnosis on the phone, kind of like your doctor's office. So before I jump off the deep end...should I just buy a new battery?

I have taken it to Alaska during the winter in search of the Northern Lights. Maybe that compromised it? You know the 20- 30 BELOW zero?

Anyone have any ideas on the best course to take? Is it even worth trying? Thanks.

PS
What are the chances this a good enough excuse to justify a whole new rig? She's going to ask.

Should be fairly easy to just check the battery

Start out by cleaning the contacts on the battery and camera.

Charge the battery and if it reacts normally its probably OK.

If all fails, send to Nikon.

You should be able to drop into a Seattle camera store, and test your battery in their D60 (used section), and test a new battery in your camera.

Exactly. Glazers and Kenmore Camera come to mind. Either should be able to help out.

Did you ever consider using a volt meter to check the battery? How old is it? They do not last for ever. Maybe the charger has gone bad. If you do not have a spare battery, then you are not very interested in photography.

No, not having a spare battery only indicates that you are not a professional who depends on photography to pay the bills and put food on the table.

In all the years, I've never needed more than one charged battery to get me through a day of shooting. And if the battery should someday go bad, I know I can order a new one and then I'll be back happily shooting away a few days later when it arrives.

How is this a helpful response?

I agree.

In my short time on here there seems to be a lot of belittling people's questions, especially newcomers.

I guess the "experts" on here forget that they too were new and did not know $$$$ from shineola about phography.

The vast majority of active Hoggers are quite helpful in answering questions, especially to legitimate 'Newbies'. But every website has a resident curmudgeon or two, whose trollish answers are meant to stir-up hate & discontent. Their sole purpose is to foster argument. Please ignore such attitudes, as the rest of us do.

I do ignore them because for the most part the members are helpful. Just the "resident curmudgeon", as you pointed out, gives the rest a black eye.
