An interview with PhotosBySteve,
1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
For about 55 years, I am currently 62. I shot with basically a point and shoot up until I bought a DSLR six years ago.
2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
I took one photography class in college just prior to buying my DSLR.
3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
Composition, perspective and balance.
4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? Can you walk us through it?
I shot this photo with a Canon 7D with a 24-105mm f/4L at f9.0 and 105mm, ISO 100, t 0.4 seconds. On a tripod in Aperture Priority mode. I setup an hour before sunrise and released the shutter approximately 3 times a minute during the highlight of the sunrise.
5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
Yes I do. I just started learning post processing six months ago. I use lightroom to download and catalog my images. I process in lightroom to adjust the dynamic range and then make other adjustments in lightroom as necessary (seldom not), I try to make my image in camera prior to PP. I will on occasion use photoshop to make actual edits. I did not use photoshop on this image, I only made minor adjustments in lightroom.
6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
Many people throughout my life have told me I take good pictures and have a good eye for photography. I am approaching retirement this November and would like to take up photograph as full-time profession. I am working hard to learn as much as I possibly can before I retire.
I rely heavily on youtube and this forum for my education and I practice constantly with both my camera and PP tools.
7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
I would have tried to learn photography at a much younger age, if I had it to do over again.
8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
Light! I am constantly trying to learn as much as I possibly can about light and how it affects color and depth.
9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
Lightroom.
10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
My 24-105mm f/4L. It is almost always mounted on my camera. I have three other lenses. A 70-200mm f2.8L, a 100mm Macro L and a fisheye. I LOVE all my lenses.
11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?
I have one speedlight I always carry. I keep all of my equipment with me at all times, or at least in close access.
12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
Play and instruct pool. Which is my other main hobby.
13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?
Probably? I just can't think of any.
14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
https://www.flickr.com/photos/steveregister15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
Practice, practice, practice.
