Any suggestions on a backpack?

I am in need of a larger backpack for my camera gear. I like this one. Two features that I really like are the ability to strap my tripod to it and the rain flap. I wouldn't need a place to carry a laptop, as that would make the pack too heavy for long distances. I am wondering how I will do with a pack this big on a 10+ mile hike, so I wouldn't want to go any bigger. I do want to take all my lenses, filters, batteries, and some cleaning supplies. Does anyone have any experience with this one? Or does anyone have a better suggestion?

Sorry to not answer your direct question, but why do you want to take "all my lenses, filters, batteries, and some cleaning supplies"? Might it make more sense to be very selective in what you carry, then find the pictures which suit what you have?

Because when I am out all day, I get too far away from my campsite to just go back and get what I need, and I never know what I might see. :-) I don't mind carrying a heavy pack. It's good for me. It keeps me in shape, but I do have my limits and I have tested them.

....and when I'm camping I'm all by myself, nobody waiting for me, I can play with whatever I want in my pack for as long as I want, and if there is something that I might want to play with, I want it in there.

You would be surprised at what you can carry on your back. When I was younger in the 70's I backpacked all over Japan for two months. No tripod but 3 cameras and 3 lens. Bulk film loader, film . Before you buy check out sporting good shops, etc. Take a close look at it. Seems etc. Straps go around the shoulders. Have a great time.

Nightski, Not sure how close in size it is but Raleigh has one he is selling in the by sell trade area. He seems to take quite good care of his things and it looks new. It was posted about the 20-27th of April and I believe is still available. Hope this is helpful for you.

Thanks! I'd love to save some bucks and it would be nice to buy from someone I can talk to. :-)

My question is about how you photograph whatever you see. If you have 2 lenses instead of 6, you find ways to photograph with those two lenses, in perhaps a more deliberate way.

Ok, I'll drop it. ;-)

You Mean the manfrotto one? Or the used Lowepro one?

Nightski:

The new June 2014 issue of Shutterbug magazine has a long article on photo backpacks with evaluations and recommendations. This may be of help to you. Just got my issue yesterday so they should be on the news stands by now. Perhaps the article is also on their web site.

Hope this helps.

Joe

Specifically what gear do you want to carry? That will help us recommend backpacks which might be good options.
