Outshot by my wife!!

On my very first vacation outing with my D7000, to Big Bend National Park, I think I learned more about what not to do than what I did well!! I did get a few nice shots, but shooting mostly in the heat of the day was a problem. Here's one that my wife took with her Powershot that came out very nice. P.S. It is totally untouched by any editing process!!

Not to worry, I've been outshot by my wife on more then one occasion.
She has a good eye, this is a nice shot with excellent composition.
However...that thin verticle tree (or whatever it is) bothers the heck of me in this shot.
Could be just me though.
Tell her to keep at it!

The shot was taken overlooking the Chisos Basin where the Chisos Mtn. Lodge is. The "tree thingy" is a flowering part of the cactus. She was shooting from the trail and could not get the top of it in from that viewpoint and keep the same view of the basin and mountains. Big Bend N.P. is composed of mountains (thank goodness you can cool off there), desert, and river (Rio Grand). The entrance to Santa Elena Canyon is awesome!!

Swampy...We went at the first of April last year thinking it would be spring....Ha...it was 103 on the desert floor!! Like I said, thank goodness for the mountains. It was 15 degrees cooler there. Thank goodness for a/c, too, and 4 wheel drive on a couple of rough roads we took.

With just a little effort, the thingey stalk could be removed w/ PS - then your excellent picture would be super-excellent !

If you can do post processing I would try to make the top of the flower stem end within the photo. Then I wouldn't be wondering "what is up there that I can't see". Otherwise, I like it.

Unfortunately she shot from the trail and this is all she could get in and still keep the composition of the the basin and the mountains. I especially like the colors of the foliage. The stalk never bothered me because I know what it is, I guess.

Here's one I took of the same general area.

I'd like to see the flower at the top of that 'spike.'

GREAT photo, keep up the good work!

Very nice, but it would have been so much better if the catus flower had been visible.

Ok, everybody wants to see the cactus flower. How? Ruin the shot of of the basin, mountains, and sky (by the way, the sky was cool)? Back up on the mountain to get the same shot with the flower, but not the cactus or the other foliage, which provide great color? If you know cacti, the stalk itself is significant. Frankly, I think it helps balance and fill the shot.
