This tree's (sycamore?) span is huge! looks like 1/4 acre wide. You can tell by the size of the pines lining the lane behind it. I didn't have the wide lens with me at the time, so some of the trunk is MIA. I can't seem to do it justice. I just got a D7100 and will have my 10-24 wide with me.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

If you Google "photographing trees," you'll see some of the best shots don't include the whole tree. The whole tree is not always possible or even preferable. Sometimes when only part of the trunk and branches are in the image, it gives the impression of immense scale. You might try utilizing the power of thirds and get the tree off to the side.

If yo want to get the entire tree in the image and don't have a wide lens with you, I would suggest you do it as a panorama and stitch two or three images together. In this case I would shoot it in a portrait mode, overlap the images by about 1/3 to 1/3 and stitch them together.

Conversely if you want to highlight the tree more, then it can be done in a variety of editing programs. Smart Photo Editor is one I use a lot and only costs $29.99 ao Topaz ReStyle which is a little more expensive. Either one will allow you to play around with highlight colors etc.

If you want me to post some simple samples let me know and I will be happy to do so. Also try to express what you are trying to get out of the image so I have a better chance to give that to you.

Dear Swede
the tree in person is so majestic I am trying to show that without putting a person in the photo. I do not know how else to express it. I would love to see your examples.

Here are three examples. It is hard to choose which one to pick. I would suggest you download free trial copies of the software and try for yourself. If you want to pursue panoramas, I can send you some that I have done on very large trees. Just PM me and send me your email address.

Also in the future click the store original button when you post the image so that we have a larger picture to look at.

I did that, also. Funny, but the guy who wrote one of the columns had the same issues as I did. How to make it "pop"

Forgive me but in the case of your photo I think you will need to show the entire tree. You do have the pine trees in the background but even then they are only partially shown. I think you need an entire something so the viewer can relate that something to the majesty of the tree.

As someone above posted consider taking a panorama shot with the camera in the vertical position? I think that might do it. Maybe I am misunderstanding your post but is your photo with the wide angle lens or did you just get the wide angle lens but have not used it yet? If you haven't I would first off give that a try.

Dennis, Thanks
I did not have the Wide with me when I took this - I will go back soon and post the new photos on this string. Thanks for the comments.

There is a lot of possibilities there for post processing. At least a good week ends worth! Love the pic as is.

I am glad you like it - I have tried numerous things - I wanted to change the sky, but got halos around the (many) branches, which I hate to see. I kind of like the one I am about to post, it is more extreme than I like, but it defines the numerous small branches.
