I have a Nikon camera that will allow wireless camera control using a smart phone. My question is has anyone used this and if so what has been your responses and what do you think of it?

Thanks in advance!!

Tom

CamrRanger is a good solution. But you can also use a battery powered minirouter and an android or iphone app to accomplish the same thing for under $100. I have used the camranger and I love it.

I have one that came in a kit, and it's not a bad little toy. It works good as a remote and if you want to be in the pic you can see what the camera sees on your phone. The nicest part is you can save the pic on your phone and email or post it instantly. The one thing I think is poorly designed is that you need to leave the access door open while it is in use and it seems it would be easy to bump it when it is plugged in It would have been nice to put another port on the camera for it. You can get the same one from Nikon for about $65.00

I have and have used TriggerTrap that allows wired control from an iPhone, iPad, Android device. Supposedly it will allow wireless control from the iPad to the iPhone (connected to the camera) in WiFi Slave Mode, but haven't tried it.

I bought the TriggerTrap from Photo JoJo.

http://triggertrap.com/products/triggertrap-mobile/

Note that TriggerTrap does not give full control of the camera; focus, exposure, shutter, ISO, aperture, etc. Nor do You see what the camera sees. It does however have a full repertoire of shutter release modes, etc.

As soon as I can afford it (I have major G.A.S.) I'm going the Cam Ranger route.

Hi Tom, I have used the WU-1a with my D7100 and my smart phone with the Nikon app. I had to pre-focus on the area that I wanted to take a photo of when the time was right. On your smart phone it will bring-up a copy of 'live view', when the time is right you then push the shutter button on your phone.
Here is a couple of results. The photo is then downloaded into your phone and is also on your SD card in your camera.

zoom range was 160mm should have been about 100

I wouldn't consider anything but a CamRanger. I watched one working on an iPad last evening (by a professional). Mine is due to arrive Friday. I ordered it from B&H on Monday. Good luck.

Would you please give me the name of the nikon phone app?

On my phone it says "wmu" which stands for "wireless mobile utility"... mine came in a camera kit from Costco but it's a standard Nikon accessory

Thanks, just looked at it. If your camera, if it's on the list, doesn't have built in wireless, you have to buy the nikon wireless adapter. It's about $100

Looks like you have the answer about the app - 'WMU'. The adapter, WU-1a is $56 from Adorama. I looked at the 'cam ranger' that device looks great - does it all.

Which Nikon? Have you considered something other than Nikon's built-in solution? Does anyone here have any experience with dslrDashboard? (It seems similar to DSLRController, which only works with Canons at this time.)

I've been testing DSLRController, using my Samsung tablet with a USB tether ("OTG" adapter). Next week I'll add wifi capability with aTP-Link TL-MR3040 router, which might require a slight hack (custom firmware upgrade). Total cost will be under $60. So far I've been quite impressed. I predict wifi links will become very common.

Thanks for the correction on the price. I didn't explore pricing further than the first thing that popped up.

Apparently if one has an Apple device, you're left out of the OTG world entirely :(

Here's a thread on dpReview concerning the use of a Nikon D600 with DSLR Dashboard

I use the camranger on both my D7000, and D800. IT is the only way to do wireless tethering as far as I am concerned. Although using the D800, I have to step down to medium Jpegs due to size, while on the D7000 I can use NEF files.

I love the client mode.
