We have never been and want to explore in April. I see several of you hail from that area and many more have photographed there.
Could you please suggest what we should not miss. Be specific, please.

No local responders yet? I love North Carolina. I don't live there but love visiting. The outer banks is one of my favorites. The smaller villages are more intriguing, less touristy. Rent a beach cottage and take in the local life. Also the Blue Ridge Parkway is worth a visit: http://www.blueridgeparkway.org/v.php?pg=69

thank you very much, first responder. Thought of the Outer Banks and the Blue Ridge but the tip of the small villages in the O.B.s is also appreciated. If you can, include some photos, labeled with specific place. Specifics in the Blue Ridge?

The Outer Banks, and Blue Ridge Parkway, are all really nice. Be sure you visit the Wright Brothers Memorial, and Museum while on the Outer Banks. The NC aquarium, on Oakacroak Island is also a good photo op. Chase the Light Houses while on the Outer Banks, we spent a whole day doing this.

On the BRP, locate Linville Gorge, drive down the access road, at some of the observation points are awsome views. A visit to Cataloochee Valley, is also a good trip. As is Cades Cove, just over the Tenneessee line, not to far from Cataloochee Valley.

You can get a little preview, of some of these places on my web-site; Link is in my signature.

Asheville... the Biltmore mansion.
Take the audio tour, it's worth it.
Our French foreign exchange student was really impressed with that side trip.

The Biltmore Estate is an awesome place, but as it is with locals. I have never been there, and do not care too much to go. Chimney Rock, is also a good little side trip.

I have been to the Biltmore Estate, Plan on a whole day at least to see everything, and it should be beautiful in April. If you happen to be in the central part of the state, the NC Zoological Park near Asheboro, is really nice. Also check out, WWW.ourstate.com which is the website of a NC State magazine that has lots of ideas that might interest you. They will be glad to sell you a subscription also if you want one.

Do you have anything particular in mind? From the mountains to the coast you cant go wrong. I live north of Winston-Salem and am partial to the state parks in the area. Hanging Rock has 3 waterfalls, Pilot Mountain, Stone Mountain has a couple of falls.... http://www.ncparks.gov/Visit/main.php
Mt. Airy is close by if you want to see the birthplace and the salutes to Andy Griffith. Go west and you have Jefferson, Boone (Home of Appalachian State), Grandfather Mountain, Blue Ridge Parkway. Towards Asheville is The Biltmore House. There is Cherokee and the Harrahs Casino, the Smokey Mtn. Railway in Bryson City, Numerous waterfalls in and near Transylvania County..... Towards Charlotte and Lake Norman..... the majority of NASCAR teams..... NC Zoo in Asheboro....the Sandhills.... pottery galore.... the coast...... Outer Banks, Wright Brothers, NC Aquarium. Museums in Raleigh.... and many neat little towns and spots in the road in between. Lots of opportunities everywhere you look. Have fun!

In SC be sure to check out Brookgreen Gardens.

http://www.brookgreen.org/

Right across the street is Huntington Beach State Park (where I photograph a lot of wildlife)

http://www.southcarolinaparks.com/huntingtonbeach/introduction.aspx

These are both just a bit south of Myrtle Beach (which you also might wish to visit)

In SC, Charelston, especially in April, is a photographers wonderland. The historical homes with the back yard gardens and fountains, cobbled streets and lamppoosts. Also, the surrounding mansions near the town, Charlestown Landing, Magnolia Plantation and Gardens with its' sweeping moss covered water oaks
Ft Sumter and the lignthouses,Old downtown churches, art on the street and basket weavers, shrimpboats in the marsh, wild birds galore and the sun rises over the ocean.black water rivers and the abundant wildlife in the Ace Basin on the coast.
Be sure to check out the
Low country around Beaufort and Hilton head are also stopping spots,
Bring your battery charger! and don't forget the cotton fields and rugged tobacco barns in Florence county
