Well I have returned from my trip to Cumberland Falls Nature Photog. Comp. I really enjoyed it and learned so much. Molly Isaacs is a fabulous speaker. I love it when someone with lots of experience tells you to not worry so much about the rules. She showed how to crop a picture to make it work and into something fabulous. She talked about macro and once again the 1:1 rule does not always apply. A close up can be considered macro(and that is all i'm saying about that because i'm not getting into a discussion about it). Photography like painting or sketching/drawing is interpretive. It can be abstract or very detailed. I did not place in the competition but one of mine did come in the top ten in its class(shown below). After hearing her and competing I want to do it again. So much fun and so rewarding. I have posted several photos I took while there in the gallery section. Thanks for all the advice I received prior to going.

Bev, I'm glad you had a wonderful learning experience. Learning from a good pro can not be replaced by web learning.
I'm sure by the next time you go, you will win ALL the competitions!!
Keep up the enthusiasm all year.

Glad it was such a good experience! :-)

None of the rules are rules, they are all guidelines. The key to going against them is knowing why you are doing that.

Bev,

I was at that same competition and also only had one in the top ten of one of the categories. Sorry I didn't get to talk to you (or did I?).

Molly Isaacs was very good and I enjoyed all three of her talks. Lots of information there and much to think about.

I don't think we talked. I really didn't talk to a whole lot of people. Kind've on the quiet side(I use that term loosely). If you were in the Mighty Macro session I asked the question about close up vs. macro. Yes it was great getting all that information and using it on site. It helps to really get it in your head. I hope to go back next year. By the way nice picture of the bridge. I wanted to stay away from what I saw a lot of people using as subjects. I guess maybe I should taken a picture of a snail or leaves. LOL.

Couldn't agree more. But as time goes by and I see more and more photographers get more rigid in following those rules, I have decided that they are merely optional suggestions - valuable considerations.

That pretty much what Mollie Isaacs was saying. They're guidelines and I also noticed that without putting much effort you naturally follow the rules. Especially with placement of subject. The lines should lead to your focal point and certain shapes and angles are more pleasing.
