Stephen Hawking on Heaven

Great article on Hawking's views on heaven, life, the cosmos, as we know it so far. If you disagree, show me the evidence. "It's a fairy tale for people afraid of the dark."

"Science, truth and beauty: Hawking's answers:

What is the value in knowing "Why are we here?"
The universe is governed by science. But science tells us that we can't solve the equations, directly in the abstract. We need to use the effective theory of Darwinian natural selection of those societies most likely to survive. We assign them higher value.

You've said there is no reason to invoke God to light the blue touchpaper. Is our existence all down to luck?
Science predicts that many different kinds of universe will be spontaneously created out of nothing. It is a matter of chance which we are in.

So here we are. What should we do?
We should seek the greatest value of our action.
You had a health scare and spent time in hospital in 2009. What, if anything, do you fear about death?
I have lived with the prospect of an early death for the last 49 years. I'm not afraid of death, but I'm in no hurry to die. I have so much I want to do first. I regard the brain as a computer which will stop working when its components fail. There is no heaven or afterlife for broken down computers; that is a fairy story for people afraid of the dark.

What are the things you find most beautiful in science?
Science is beautiful when it makes simple explanations of phenomena or connections between different observations. Examples include the double helix in biology, and the fundamental equations of physics."

Questions and partial answers, are the best thing about it. Life, that is.

And what to do with all those philosophy books and departments throughout the world.

Who said, "The unexamined life is not worth living?"

Socrates (Plato):

ὁ δὲ ἀνεξέταστος βίος οὐ βιωτὸς ἀνθρώπῳ (ho de anexetastos bios ou biôtos anthrôpôi)
The unexamined life is not worth living for a human being.
38a
Variant translations:
(More closely) The unexamining life is not worth living for a human being
The life which is unexamined is not worth living.
An unexamined life is not worth living.
The unexamined life is not the life for man.
Life without enquiry is not worth living for a man.

Huh?? Nobody mentioned anything about proof or said anything about being right. If you're itching for a fight, go bother someone else.

Now, I am not looking to pick up a fight with you or with any body else. I like to discuss and interchange intelligent arguments on the subject we are talking at that time. Do not worry my friend, you are safe...I regret I start this nonsense by answering your post..but believe me, I am not planning to bother you...just ignore me and you will be just fine... Thanks.

Please allow me if I may. Hawking does not believe in an after life or believe that it was God who created the cosmos for the simple reason that he could not prove in the existence of a God nor the creation of the heavens or the after-life. If science can not prove it then it must not exist.

As smart as Hawking's was he could not look around and see God's hands in the creation of the heavens and of the earth. Yet you say that do not need to prove what you don't believe in, nor do I need to prove to you that which I do believe in. My proof is all around me and my proof of God's existence in the life that I have lived.
