I have been asked by a friend to restore an old photo. I haven't done this for several years. Are there any good tutorials out there?

Thanks!

That would vary WIDELY upon the software you have available to you for this purpose.

The book "CS4 for Dummies" has a whole chapter dedicated to the restoration of old photos. Not sure if its still in print but might be available through Amazon.
Good luck.

I did this restoration years ago with Photoshop 7. It's not the software IMHO, it's the technique and the time/effort put forth. Basically, it all starts with a good scan of the original.

(btw, the tall guy is my grandpa with his Army buds, San Antonio, 1942.)

Good Luck with your project! If you get stuck, or need detailed advice (not that I'm any expert), message me and I'll lend a hand. I am using CS3 at the moment, however the technique would be exactly the same.

I have often wondered if you have a border that used to be white, it you could use that as an accurate white balance marker for the rest of the photo. This picture looks like it. Is it true in general?

In general, I would have to say yes. In this instance I found the opposite to be true: as I adjusted levels and curves for the image overall, the border "whitened" right along.
