Start with the full manual. Not the basic one that comes with most cameras now. Stay on auto and in the mean time learn one setting at a time. My most useful books are by Scott Kelby. Very easy to understand. Don't expect to comprehend everything at once. It took me a year and a half to fully understand my Rebel t3i. As you use your camera and see the results things will click. I will be upgrading to the 70d soon. Can't wait.

Read your manual and get a copy of Bryan Peterson's "Understanding Exposure, 3rd Edition". This will help you to a large degree. Good luck and have fun.

Whenever I get a new bit of new technology, be is a computer, cellphone or camera, the first thing I do is head straight to Amazon and look for a "For Dummies" book. They are quite inexpensive and will arrive in a few days. They have the Canon D70 in both print and Kindle format. This will get you started.
Good Luck, John :)

Hopefully you mean the Canon EOS 70D. If so, then believe it or not Canon EOS 70D for Dummies written by Julie Adair King is the best book for your purpose. Amazon has it. Cheap enough that if you don't like it you haven't spent a lot of money for nothing.

Hi. I notice that one book being recommended repeatedly by several different members. It must be a fabulous book. I believe that there has been 3 editions. I also notice that Bryan Peterson has a newer offering: Bryan Peterson's Exposure Solutions: The Most Common Photography Problems and How to Solve Them.

Many reviewers state that the two books cover much of the same material. I've looked at the table of contents of both books. I sort of liked the solution based setup of the more recent book. But the newer book, I believe, does not cover HDR as does the older book.

I'm wondering which would be the better purchase. "Understanding Exposure" has street cred; I'm guessing that most will continue the recommendation :-)

I think playitpaul was looking for a book that was Canon EOS 70D specific and not something generic. Of course for all I know, Bryan Peterson's book may be specific to the 70D. If so, great!
