Although I've never done this, you do have choices. Your budget will determine which way you go.

The lighting port,or the other one before it, is not designed to export video without specialized hardware:

At $1500, you'd have to do heavy cost justification.

Tethering is a rather tricky thing as each camera treats it different. Sadly. I keep a video monitor attached to check each shot for focused eyes and histogram. I have a D800 and all the tether software I've seen downloads the picture to the computer and a copy is NOT kept on the card. As the files are big it does take a moment to download.

cam ranger works great.........allows you to shoot from any level and position.....
