Technically, the red channel has a significant number of blown pixels.
Subjectively, there just isn't anything particularly interesting about the shot.
The black plastic pot is in focus but that's about all I can say about it, really.
Sorry, Rob.
It does say earth for sure. Appreciate the attempt at staging the story. Too many things going on here. Perhaps just the shovel, and more of the plant being planted would simplify the image. There is a DOF issue with the branch in the foreground but again if it was not in the composition it would improve the entry. Same with the bright yellow objects. Try it again and see if making it less busy does indeed give it more impact.
You've made your statement, so as far as communicating something you've succeeded quite nicely. If it had been possible to not have that branch coming forward into the lens, it would have helped a lot. I like the fact that the pot is yellow, but the yellow box behind it seems out of place and sort of takes over the scene.
These are really good critiques and all good. I felt like I had a decent picture but it was out of whack. You guys are nailing it. Thanks
No intent to pile on, but the top of the big planter, the top of the yellow box, and the grass-line/ base of fence are all in line. Try not to have different components arranged, albeit inadvertently, in such perfect line.

You have assembled a bunch of items which in some way, to you at least, represent the concept of "earth", although I'm not sure what the black plastic container with the coloured stick is doing in the picture. Then you have placed some out of focus leaves in the front. I can't suggest anything to improve the picture because I can't figure out what you were trying to accomplish. As a photograph it is uninteresting.
The shot is about planting a tree. The big plastic container is holding a new tree. Perhaps if you had dug the big hole first and had removed the plastic around the base, and maybe even taken the shot while someone was hoisting that tree into the hole. My mom took a shot of me doing this for her once, and she took it from her deck with was above where I was working. It turned out pretty good from that angle as you could see the deep hole, the tree roots, and my feet straddling the hole so I wouldn't fall in. It was obvious what that photo was all about.
Thanks so much for taking the time to critique this picture. Everyone's comments and observations have been most helpful.
