No idea what the title of this thread means, but notice that you use "st johns" in the title and "st john" in your message.
St John is in New Brunswick, St John's is in Newfoundland and Labrador.
As to what not to miss, I really don't know, as I live on the west coast. However, find a Tourist Information office in town, and they will have more information for you than you can use in a week.

Why would anybody look forward to a week in Newfoundland vs the Virgin Islands in the Caribbean?

I've never been to either Newfoundland or the Virgin Islands. However, living in Canada, and considering how little I have seen of my own country, if it came to a toss-up, I'd choose Newfoundland. I want to get to know my own backyard before I venture over to the neighbours' backyards.
