Originally, "hacker" was a benign term for people in the early personal computer years that made innovative customizations or combinations of retail and home made computer parts to build something that was new and better.

It has grown into a term of scorn for people that use their skills to circumvent security protocols for personal gain and or enjoyment.

This is great.

I remember the story about NASA over-writing Armstrong's videos of the his moon walk. Such a tragedy. Nobody made the tape anymore so NASA grabbed some from the archives and taped over it, not knowing what it had on it.
