If the magnets are strong enough to hold the camera, I would be concerned about the magnet messing with the card media. It may seem a little extreme, but strong magnets can cause those media cards to scramble or lose data!!

I agree with tool man. My camera with grip and a 200mm lens, Pocket Wizard etc. weighs a lot. Magnets near my card and camera??, I would be careful.

I would be really suspect on how much weight it could carry safely. I know my Canon 40d with a battery grip and a telephoto lens weighs quite a bit and I never saw him attach the camera at a 90 degree angle. It was always either at the top of the ball or the bottom. I think if I had tried to put it on the side of the ball, it would have sagged down towards the bottom of the ball.

Also, If the magnets would be strong enough, I would worry that they would erase or damage my credit cards I carry in my wallet I keep in my front pocket. :-) It is a novel idea and I do think it has promise for P/S cameras or cell phone cameras. Things that don't weigh too much.

It is a decent concept, however, no real testing appears to have been done.
I believe he needs to determine how much weight can be supported (may need different magnets to support different camera and lens). Determine if the the combination of weight and the strength of the magnet can hold up under such conditions as wind (i.e.driving with the device and camera on top of a car)etc. Then develop magnet mounts that could hold up under those conditions.
As mention; What effect, if any, will it have on the media in the camera?
He also needs to apply for a patent or several, then search out a company to back him. This will allow him to do the additional R&D.

Toolman,is this yours?

Maybe with a Flip or pocket P&S, but bo way I would put a DSLR and lens on that thing, way too much mass and weight to trust on something that small. Will it come wit $5000 in free breakage insurance?? Then maybe.

I think you said in the video clip that it will attach to any "metal surface". Not so! To iron and most steel yes, but definitely not to aluminum, copper, brass, and even to some grades of stainless steel etc etc.

Amen!!!! 45 years of computer service and the magnet was one of our biggest fears. Magnets and memory DO NOT go together. Memory cards are magnetic devices. Strong magnetic fields act as beautiful erasers. Actually, our cameras today are computer driven and again, computers and magnets do not see eye to eye.

Memory card are solid state not magnetic, they are solid state magnetic fields should not effect them. They are not magnetic like floppy disks. However cameras with electrically controlled magnetic shutters might be effected by very strong magnets.

Judging by the way he is handling the magnets they don't look strong enough. If used make sure the camera strap is around the neck or firmly attached to something to keep the camera from falling.
Magnets strong enough to do the job can be dangerous if you get part of your body between the magnet & another magnet or large piece of steel.

I noticed that when he tilted the camera forward he held onto the camera. Therefore there was no demonstration that the device would securely hold the camera at all angles. I wouldn't even test it.

My first concern when starting this project was the effect of magnets on digital storage... and so I did research it...
I found that digital storage has absolutely no problem with magnets whatsoever... unless the magnetic field is so ridiculously strong that it would be dangerous to be near it.

As far as the magnets effecting the magnetic shutter... I haven't found much data... but my own experiments holding the strongest magnets I own against the camera and the lens at various positions while taking pictures has yielded no noticeable effects.
