I found this cast iron pot behind my carport today, its all rusted with very little paint left on it but it definately caught my eye.

This item appears to be steel, not cast iron.

Your image is interesting, but I find the drop-off of the DoF to be distracting. If the dried leaf is your subject, then fine; but if the pot is your subject, then more DoF would be advantages.

If your item has any welded seams, then it is steel; if no welded seams, then it may well be cast iron.

thank you for the info on the pot, I believe it was used to bring the ash out of our fireplace a long time ago because we have another one actually sitting inside the fireplace. I do have another photo of the pot, I will post it too.

Your near-identical info suggests that you used a zoom lens, and varied only the focal length. I prefer your second image. My suggestion for a re-shoot is to lower your ISO, decrease aperture to f/11 or f/16, and adjust your shutter duration for proper exposure. You do not need 1/1250-sec exposure.

Good picture, but I agree with the DoF comment. The pot may be iron. If it is, it may be saved. Clean it with coarse sandpaper on a palm sander. If it is black under the rust, continue until the rust is removed, and bake it with a coating of cooking oil. If it is silver with black pits, it is steel, and not worth any more effort.

<g> use a stick!
If you decide to clean it, do a series of photos showing progress from rusted hulk, to possibly usable tool.
