You are sitting at your desk and the shot of a lifetime presents itself outside of your studio window. You go to grab a camera, and you have a choice. You must decide between your D610 fitted with a 50mm 1.8, or a D7100 fitted with a 35mm 1.8. Everything else is rented out, or in use.

Which one do you grab?

Would it matter to you?

Why?

If it were the shot of a lifetime and it was only a fleeting moment it wouldn't matter one iota.

My question: why would you pose this in such a brand-specific, model-specific manner, rather than citing general characteristics that most photographers could relate to? (Are you a shill for Nikon?)

In that example it would matter little if any at all. Out the window implies good lighting, both cameras have the same angle of view, I would grab whichever were closest so long as I knew both had charged batteries and memory cards installed. In lower light the D610 would win out though.

The 50mm is supposed to be one of Nikon's best lenses. I don't know about the 35mm. So, everything else being equal, go with the 50mm.

If it had to be a "split second decision" you wouldn't stop to think which one to use either, you'd just grab "that black box" and while running outside turn it on and bring it to your eye, all the while hoping the shot of a lifetime can still be taken when you get there.

If you only have a split second the probability that which ever you grab won't be set up right to capture the image properly anyway. By the time you know if the thing is on, in the right mode and you decide to shoot through the glass or run outside you will miss the shot or be so out of focus the whole thing will just be another Oh $hit moment.

My thoughts exactly. Funny though, I never really considered it until just now. I found it unusual because I never match FP's on my cameras while working.

They'll wait till the kids are in bed!
Maybe just me, but I have never regretted spending time with my kids and grandkids whild I can, and leaving the important business stuff till they were in bed, or later on, in school.
If that is not an option, take a break and go join them for 15 or 20 minutes. They grow up wa-a-a-a-y-y-y-y too fast.
