Traveling to Italy...

I've been asked to perform a wedding in Bergamo, Italy this coming August. Never having traveled in that part of the world before, I'm wondering where any of you traveled that would offer great photo ops.
Specifically, we will be in Bergamo on a Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Sunday could be a travel-around-town day. We will likely take a train to Venice on Monday. Tuesday could be another day trip, as well as possibly Wednesday. Are there other day trips by train to consider?
I'm guessing that the views around Bergamo will be amazing, but are there any specific places we should look for there? Vatican City might be too far for our travel time and budget. I'll be sure to post a few pics of the trip.
In the search tab above, type in 'travel in italy' without the quotes

Thanks for that Sarge...will do!
After a day trip to Venice by train you might try Verona. If you can make time -- my favorite city is Florence. Wow! But that is a trip that would make you want to stay. Train travel in Italy is a pleasure. I wouldn't try Rome. A good photo opportunity would be in Como (about an hour from Milan). If you decide on Como, PM me and I will tell you about a place to eat that will make you cry - Gato Nero. Italy is our favorite country to visit. You should love it.

Here's a great day out for you from Bergamo ....... hire a car, head for the southern end of Lake Como and Como town. Drive up the western side of that "arm" of the lake to Menaggio. Park your car and take the boat ride across to Bellagio. Short walk to
" I Giardini di Villa Melzi".
That'll be a trip you'll never forget.
My oldest son & daughter-in-law are in Italy right now... Dropped them off at the airport on Monday... They are going to visit Rome, Venice & Florence. Family members & friends who have been there all said Florence was the best...
I'd go to Sirmione or Desenzano or anywhere on the Garda Lake dependind on your likes, it's close enough.

While in Bergamo, make sure to go to citta' alta. This is the old section of Bergamo that is on the mountaintop overlooking citta' bassa, the newer section of Bergamo. From citta' alta, there are many vantage points for taking great photos. You will enjoy Bergamo, as it is a very clean and beautiful city. My wife and I will be there the first week of September. Can't wait !!!

Heading to Italy myself in 10 days. You will be near the mountains and Lake Como while I will be in Florence, Tuscany, Venice, and the Portofino Coast before heading to Paris. I am sure there will innumerable photo ops. Look at the old church interiors, think about long exposures to allow blurring of pedestrians, and whatever else grabs your interest.
Here's one my son took in Venice.

Just a word of advice, but try another city and forego Venice. It's
like Disneyland and a tourist trap with thousands of people walking around. Florence and surrounding cities and will be much more pleasurable.

Do some research on the internet and youtube. Lots of great photo ops all over the place in Italy. You didn't say how long you were going to be there. Such a waste to travel all the way over there and not spend enough time to really immerse yourself in the experience. Just a week hardly scratches the surface. But maybe that might inspire you to return at another time. Ciao

Thank you all for this great advice! Sarge, the search for 'travel to Italy' was full of info as well as all of the others here. BobbyT, I was wondering that about Venice. We were hoping to trek on over to Turin, but they do not have the shroud on public display until 2015. I really am liking the trip over to the lake mentioned, so we just might check into that! Thanks again!
