I'm shooting with a Nikon D700. When I shoot in Aperture Priority mode, I'm not sure how to adjust my shutter speed. When setting the aperture to F22, I get slow shutter speed. Can I adjust the shutter in AP mode, or should I be shooting in Manuel mode instead AP?

Thanks in advance

When you shoot in A you are setting the aperture and the camera selects the shutter speed based on what its meter deems correct for the scene. If you want to control shutter use S, and the camera will selct the aperture. If you want control over both you have to shoot in M, for full manual control.

Apreture mode (A or AV)- you set the aperture, the camera sets the shutter speed. Shutter mode (S or TV)) you set the shutter speed, the camera sets the aperture.
Shoot in Manual to adjust both.

For any selected f/stop, you can somewhat adjust the shutter speed using exposure compensation. I have mine set to a half stop per step.

Get to know your D700, it's a great camera!
Not to start a riot, but it seems like there are more Nikon shooters on this site. FYI: we have both nikon and canon here at work... and yes, I know there are other good brands out there.

Apeture priority is a setting that you set the f/stop and the camera choses the appropriate shutter speed. If you want to set both, you'll need to use manual.

You also can change your speed in Apature by changing your ISO

You have the wrong camera; sell it to me. I have 4 Nikons and you can have your choice or all four.

Maybe you should try your hand at shooting in Manual mode. You can control shutter speed with the rear dial, and aperture with the front dial. Looking through the viewfinder, you can compose the shot, view the aperture setting and shutter speed, and increase or decrease either without on the fly. There is also a meter which tells you if your over or under exposed. It's a great way to learn.

You may want to try P mode. If it is the same as on my D5100 it varies both shutter speed and apeture to keep exposure correct as you rotate the thumb wheel. I probably use it the most. Scott Kelby recommends it for your walk around setting.

I see no reason to eschew Auto. It has expertise from hundreds of photographers and thousands of engineering hours and tens of thousands of pictures built into it. You should learn what it will do for you.

For special situations you may want to try A or S mode.

I don't recommend using manual mode except for very special situations that demand it (e.g. shooting the moon). If you want to do that buy a used SLR for $35. I have one I used for 20 years you can have.
