The standards and requirements were different.

not really, the only things that have changed are lighting situations and expectations. people who call themselves pros and advanced amateurs with only 1/3 of the time and effort of their predesessors.

Of course I love the new lenses. Zooms that give great IQ. But many of the old Prime lenses are still great and you can get just as good as pictures with them as the new. And if a pro wanted to work harder he could get pictures that would be just as good as with modern lenses. But as said you need to work a lot harder. some of us do have an old lens that would be hard to replace with a new one. I have a old 135mm Spiratone F/2.8 that I bought in 1970 that is my favorite head and shoulder lens. Why? It's sharp and has a 15 blade aperture that gives great bokeh. It will be the lens I use for head shots on my High School Senior shoots again this year. - Dave

My "newest" lens is a late 80's Canon 50mm f1.8 MkI (with the metal mounts) It is totally compatible with my 6D and is a great lens, that is why they still make it as the MKII with plastic mount.

Define "true Photographer"?

You take as long as necessary to get the shot you want, sometimes manual (macro shots) sometimes auto (sports, birds in flight etc.)

Who sets the rules on how long a shot takes, why its the guy behind the lens of course. One thing you have to know about Photography, there are very few if any "rules" and those there are, are to broken anytime you feel like it.! It is an artistic medium and as such the latitude for expression is great.
