Acoustic Guitar Players in the UHH

Do we have any avid acoustic guitar players among the UHH members? If so, two questions:

1. What type of music do you play?
2. What guitar(s) do you play?

I am a member of a folk group that meets each Sunday afternoon. I play a Martin D-35 and an old Gibson.

I play classic guitar: I use a Gracia guitar made of teak back and sides, cedar top, maple neck, walnut finger board. I never would have imaged this combination of woods, yet after playing about 300 or so, this had the richest, warmest sound.

Isn’t it great when you find a guitar that sounds so good to your ear. It is a four leaf clover.

Segovia used to spend summers in Argentina hanging out with the Gracia clan. He is rumored to have collaborated with the luthiers to create some of their most lasting designs.

I enjoy going into a luthier’s shop and just watching.

Lucky you with the Martin & Gibson! What model Gibson? Send me a PM if you're coming this way.

I like and play " Americana " , it's vast. I make all my instruments, except for my 3 good fiddles. I have made a viola & the double bass in my avatar. These are all old shots with a point and shoot, no pp.

The last two shots of my Magpie doing the shuffle and " chicken pickin " are with my new camera and some pp.

I play a telecaster (sorry!) but love the sounds of some of these acoustic instruments and really appreciate the workmanship that goes into crafting instruments of all types and makes. However with all the love and attention given to your mandolin(?) couldn't you have found something better than a piece of string as a strap?

Although I am not the acoustic guitarist, my husband is--he just read this post. He is an old rock and roller, played is a band in England before immigrating. His concentration now is folk. American and Celtic. He has too many guitars although he says that is not possible. I know that he has a Mossman and the newest is a Martin. The others are lost on me. Also plays the Irish whislte. We used to live in the mountains of Colorado before moving to the end of the earth here. We follow some of the folk festivals here is in Florida. He is attending a Roots Music Camp in Colorado in June.

Spindrift, in some circles anything more than a string or leather thong is showing off.

:)

Puffin, your husband is right.

Wife to husband - " How many guitars do you need?! "

Husband - " Count 'em up after I'm Dead. "

Guess you Aussies are tougher than you look, a leather thong would make my eyes water and a string would be a complete embarrassment!

8-)

The guitar I play the most ( because I never put it away ) is a Korean Fender dready. Solid western red ceder top, back & sides laminated. I'm in good company, Neil Young keeps cheapies stashed around the house for when the song writing muse says " Hi ".

Puffin:

Please tell your husband that some of us in Grand Lake, CO are conducting an Americana Songwriting Workshop on July 18-20 this summer. He could go to www.peggymann.com to get more detail or PM me.

Tex:

Those look to be beautiful instruments. The pics that include the birds are keepers....really great! Especially to those of us who love to look at strings and the wood behind them. The bird really adds. We have not decided on our next trip our of the US, but your neck of the woods is a great option. I would definitely stop by to take a look at your creations (photos and instruments), and maybe play a couple of songs.

I think my Gibson is an early 40s LG-2. The Martin is a 1983.

If you get to Colorado this summer, bring your guitar and camera we are having a Americana Songwriting Workshop in July for the better part of three days and before and after you could do a photo shoot of the Rocky Mountain National Park. Look at: www.peggymann.com for a bit more detail on the songwriting workshop.
