Joe,
After a thread on UHH a few weeks back about focusing issues I downloaded a test pattern, taped it to the wall in a brightly lit room, mounted my 5D/III with 24-105mm combo on a tripod and took a number of test shots at different aperatures. Used all the regular techniques to avoid camera shake and compared manual with auto focus, mirror up and down, etc. Then examined each shot from center to edge, enlarged(magnified). No problem or need for micro lens calibration. Would try this. Perhaps one of the UHH regulars can find the link to that internet article. I would send the lens back if even the slightest problem is found between the two sides of the test pattern.

Always a good idea to test a new lens. I looked at this image in PS and can not find any big focus difference left-to-right. There is more contrast on the left which may give you the impression of greater sharpness. Nothing is really tack sharp and I suspect the 1/10 speed is the problem as well as shooting at 24mm and f/5. Most zooms do not perform well at their widest setting and near their maximum aperture.

I don't know if this tells the whole story with 1/10 of a second. You should get a sharp shot with IS activated. I've managed a sharp photo @ 300mm before with IS activated @1/6 second. Admittedly, using the "store" for the photograph would be more revealing.
Thanks everyone..in one fell swoop I have returned both camera and lens. I did not like the blurriness consistently on the right side of the frame. It seems to point to camera malfunction rather than a bad lens....but not knowing for sure and buying the outfit as a package....seems best to send it home while I still can.....one of the perks of an amazon purchase. So now what??? I'm thinking it might be time to give the Nikon d800e a second look. Not sure which lenses...but certainly a VR zoom like the 24-80 or 24-120. Any suggestions in this regards folks? (Its nice to not feel like I'm alone in my quest!)
Before you dump your outfit into the trash, I will pay the postage if you ship to my address! Mesa, AZ
David,
I don't know everything about my equipment especially since I just got it...but I don't know nothing...so I'd be interested to hear what you think on this.
Too late. It was a kit so I had to send back the whole kit to get my refund. I may still go with the 5dmkiii..but with different lenses. I like Image Stablization with these sensitive creatures so I have some work to do. In the meantime, I may just give the Nikon d800e a spin with 24-70 or 24-120 f/4g ed with vibration reduction (VR). I really like to have the option to crop up to half the image away if needed and I'd like mitigated chromatic abberation if possible.
To one degree or another..the difference in clarity is always there. If you don't do a lot of enlarging or cropping you might get away with it but that's not what I do.
Thanks
J.
Thanks, Hayden...read it through...lots of info there. What lens would you suggest in the zoom group? I really liked the Canon zoom choices but Nikon doesn't have as good a quality lens (or so I thought) at the same focal lengths.

In my opinion, regardless of name brand, 24-70mm & 70-200mm are the very best but you will have to decide whether you're willing to pay for 2.8.
I think the 24-70 2.8 version II may be the next experiment. I note the dropping prices in the 5d mkiii and the thought occurred to me that something with a few more megapixels may be in the wings...so
I'll give it a little time before taking another plunge. Thanks for your savey guidance.
