After suffering with a rather arduous learning curve with Microsoft 8 which came on my new dell computer (Amazon lied, they told me it had 7, they even supposedly checked with Dell to confirm), I came to one conclusion, Microsoft 8 sucks. I'm glad I kept my old XP computer at least I can still use it off line.
I think that rather than worrying about how many toilets there are in Africa, Bill Gates should go back to Seattle and design a decent operating system.

I have been using and enjoying Win7. I have never had problems updating from any early Win version to the next. I recently bought a Win8 laptop for my wife as an upgrade from XP. She is frequently mystified by something or other and asks me for help. I am as helpless as she is. It is totally incomprehensible to me. Finding system functions is utterly non intuitive. I think I could master it if I spent a lot of time, but that is time I don't have. I am sticking with 7.

Yeah its got quite a learning curve, One tip I can give you is the little window thingy where the start menu used to be right click that and you get a lot of the system stuff.

You really need a touch screen to get the full benefit of Win8. I found that the Start8 app is a necessity in the transition. Free for 30 days and then just $4.99 if you like it.

Start8 brings back the familiar Win7 start button search box to make your transition to Windows 8 easier. The first thing you'll notice when firing up your new Windows 8 PC is the lack of a Start button. For design reasons, Microsoft has removed the old Start menu in favor of the new Metro Start screen. Start8 aims to bring it back and help you make your move to the new Windows without compromising productivity.

In my travels around the internet classic shell seems to be a favorite,

I stay away from cnet downloads they bundle too much spyware in their downloads

One thing I have noticed is that when it updates it defaults back to its original startup (like NO Files listed - very worrisome and Internet explorere instead of Firefox) Give it a while (make a cup of tea and curse the damn thing a bit) reboot and everything seems to come back fine.

It also took me by suprise and wanted my email and log in in order to start - very worrisome. Managed to disable that....

I am really curious. You say you live Tampa, but the sample screen is in Turkish. I have visited there several times and like the place.

when I installed Classic Shell ( http://www.classicshell.net/ ) I heaved a sigh of relief. It's Like a gift sent from heaven.

I agree with you. I have only heard of complaints about windows 8. I have been using windows 7 and it's OK. I did like XP better. I don't know why they only support an OS for so many years and you are forced to buy another OS. I guess I can answer my own question......MONEY.

My wife and I have been using W8 since day one, she is very intolerant of new technology and but got used to the new OS very quickly. If Viscountdriver can learn to use it anyone should be able to.

I run 7 on the main computer and 8.1 on my laptop. I'm sorry, but the "toytown" style of 8 has only made my mind up to go over to Mac when I replace my main computer.
