This may be a stupid question but I would like to purchase a Gimbal Head for my big sigma lens. Will this head fit any tripod? I have a Dolica Proline 60 tripod with ball head that supports 13 # but I would prefer something that supports a little more weight.

I have an optika gimbal mounted on a heavy manfrato and its a tank but it makes handling the big Sig a breeze.

First check to see that your head can be removed from your tripod, many of these Chinese made combos are permanently attached.
Second, all gimbal type heads available come with a base mount that attaches to a 3/8" stud, so your tripod will need to have this size stud to mount them. If your tripod has a 1/4" stud you will have to get a 1/4" to 3/8" adapter bushing.

I bought a cheap, made in China, Dolica from Costco for about $80 at Christmas. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003UGSL70/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i02?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I was with a friend shooting birds and sunsets in the Arizona desert. His budget for everything he buys is always 3 or 4 times mine. When he needed a printer he bought a Canon Pro-1 when I was buying a Pro-100!

He has some spectacular Nikon gear and a top of the line Manfroto tripod and head. He has a brand new car too. When he went to Italy, the Nikon didn't fit his carry on luggage very well, so he bought a Sony NEX 6 and extra lens.

The "Chinese" Dolica seemed to be at least 95% as well made as his Manfroto. At least my bird pictures were better.

The Dolica that I have came with a removable head and has a 3/8" stud for heads.

Yes,I purchased my tripod from Costco as well.I like the tripod when using my smaller lenses as it is light weight & easy for me to carry around but not with my big sigma lens.

For really big lenses, you need really big hardware, like Really Right Stuff. You have to see their products to believe the quality and why the cost is justified.

Marilyn - you might like to check out this gimbal .......

http://www.lensmaster.co.uk/rh2.htm

Made in England, but a high quality unit, cheaper than many better known products but just as good. A number of UHH members in the USA have purchased and are highly satisfied. The maker is well used to sending stuff to your country.

Be sure to watch the video.

General rule of thumb - you should only put 1/2 the load weight on the tripod. this includes camera, lens, head or gimbal, etc.

I have had good luck with the Induro gimbal head. It will support my 600 prime and is rock steady.
Best of all it's not way overpriced. Comes with a 5 year warranty

MT Shooter is going to be a distributor of a Gimbal that is cheaper and I trust MT implicitly. We should support him for all the help he has given us.
