Lenticular clouds stacking up over Mt. Rainier...

The birth of the clouds
The birth of the clouds...

"Face In The Clouds". I usually don't make too much out of cloud formations however this one got my attention. I was photographing lightning one evening and had taken many photographs in rapid succession. It wasn't until I transferred them to my computer that I saw the Face.

An interview with louelke,

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
About 40 years, my love of nature and landscapes

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
I learned from books, magazines, and my husband, a Navy photographer at the time.

3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
Composition, color, clarity,

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? Can you walk us through it?
For this image - a tripod and my first digital camera, a used Canon EOS 20D

5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
Since I am new to digital and still learning I don't really have a workflow, but the basics I do with my photos in PS is levels, contrast, image saturation and some sharpening

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
My inspiration for landscape photography was the works of Ray Atkeson , but honestly, for this shot I was just extremely lucky to have been in the right place at the right time. I have lived in Washington state for 30+ years, and you often see a single lenticular cloud over Mt. Rainier, but cloud upon cloud stacking up like that is a extremely rare, especially when it happens around sunset.

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
I did wish I would have had the time you get to a higher location with a more unobstructed view.

8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
What an addiction this can become.

9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
My tripod or monopod

10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
A wide angle lens to capture all the expanse of the landscape.

11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?
Don't use any

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
Actually, not sure, but the love of photography certainly is a motivator to keep me going even when there are physical challenges at my age.

13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?
Oh, you mean like going out on a hike and taking lots of pictures not having any film in the camera?

14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
Planning on posting some on Flickr, just haven't gotten around to it yet.

15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
You are never to old to learn.

An interview with abby,

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I began my journey into photography in high school and learned photography from my mother.

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
No formal training - I like many types of photography - landscape, street, cityscapes, stills, etc.

3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
One that immediately grabs your attention - mostly has to do with composition.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? Can you walk us through it?
The "Face In The Clouds" photo was taken when I was photographing lightning. While there are several ways to get lightning photos ( lightning sensors, etc.), this is how I do it: The camera is on a tripod, manual mode, manual focus, bulb setting, mirror-up function to reduce any vibration, and a remote cable release. I focused on a distant stationary object ( in this case the bridge ),then I took repeated 30 second shutter speed shots, hoping lightning would strike during on of those intervals. d800, Nikkor f/2.8 24-70mm lens, 30sec. at f/22, ISO 100. ( I was 6 miles from the lightning - don't get too close ).

5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
I use Lightroom 4.0 - mostly for some sharpening and color adjustments.

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
Just another lucky shot.

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
Pretty happy with this shot.

8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
Early on I was more more concerned with the technical aspects of using a film camera rather than composition, which I feel is more important.

9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
Tripod!

10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
My Nikkor f/2.8 24-70mm - great fast lens - I am so glad I made this investment - is just excellent with the d800.

11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot? None.

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do? Travel.

13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?
None that I can share!

14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
http://www.flickr.com/photos/knee_doc and Instagram - search for doctornikon

15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
"Do what you love and love what you do".
Thanks to all on UHH - great photo web site.
Abby

An interview with dragonswing,

WOW!! Can't believe I am one of the winners. Thanks so much.

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I have always been interested in photography since I was a child. I started with the little Kodak box camera, (I still have that camera!) then when I went oversees (through the Air Force in 1978) I got myself a 35 mm--Yashica FX2. That served me well until I made the leap into digital and got a Nikon D40x about 6 years ago. Funny thing though--I had trouble figuring it out, no one around to ask, so it sat in the box in the back of the closet for nearly 5 years. It started getting difficult to find film and someone to process it, so I got the Nikon back out and have been using it along with a Sony Cybershot that I got so I could carry it in my purse at all times. Only my Sony is a lot bigger than the cybershot they have now. To me, photography has always been my way to escape reality. I can go to my "happy" place.

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
I have never received any type of formal training. Everything I do is by trial and error. That is why I like being able to ask questions on the Hedgehog site. I mainly like nature and wildlife photos, along with sunsets, waterfalls (wish there were some around me) and my cats. I don't do people unless I see someone really interesting and still life just does not excite me.

3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
I like trying to find an interesting subject and a unique way of showing the subject. During this past year I just got into photoshop elements and have been able to do some post processing. I have been noticing how much better a photo can be just by adding a bit more contrast--seems to make it pleasingly pop out and be noticed more. I still have a LOT to learn about post processing.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? Can you walk us through it?
I just used my Sony Cybershot for the cloud photo. The story behind the photo is funny. I had been looking for a particular wooden box. A friend told me she had seen the box in one of the craft stores. I drove nearly an hour to the store to get it and was quite disappointed that they had none. So I was bummed out (wasted all that gas), stepped out of the store to go to my car, looked up and saw such a glorious sight with the clouds. They were beautiful. So I dug my Sony out of my purse and got the photo. I felt deeply inspired. It was one of the "wow" moments in my life and I feel that the Lord gave me that moment as a way to say the trip was worth it. It was handheld, no flash.

5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
I am just now learning to post process. So far it has mainly been increasing contrast, a bit of sharpening, cropping. I am just now learning how to combine two photos into one, so that is going to be my next venture.

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
I think the beauty of nature has both influenced and inspired me in what photos I take. I want to capture the beauty so I can view it over and over. When I saw the small clouds in the light rays, they appeared to have been "born" from the larger darker clouds and it just reminded me how we are reborn in the Lord. From the darkness, there can be light. I enlarged that photo, matted and framed it. It hangs on my wall so I can be inspired every day.

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
I wish I had taken the time to shoot more of the clouds. I had only allotted a few minutes to stop at the store before I had an appointment. I should have lingered, taken more shots of the clouds, because I feel it was a once in a lifetime moment. Who cares if you are a bit late for an appointment? Drs always keep you waiting anyway. I wish I would have paid attention to the right side of the bottom darker cloud because I seem to have cut it off unnaturally---it made me learn to always pay attention to corners!!

8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
So many things!!! When I started I knew nothing about focal lengths, aperature values, etc. If I had I probably could have gotten a lot more better photos. For example--I got a focused leaf blade in front of an unfocused animal. That was not my intention!! Or I could have gotten a focused subject with an uncluttered, blurred background.

9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
I don't have a lot of accessories, other than some special effect filters from the 35mm days. One of the things I love is the harness strap with which I carry my camera. It is great in that your camera is kept close to your chest. That comes in handy when hiking, esp over rocks. Less chance to hitting a rock which could cause damage!

10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
I love the Nikon 85mm 1.35 macro lens---lets me get real close to flowers and insects while I can still take other shots as well. I am waiting to get the new Tamron 150-600 lens. My desire is to catch the great blue herons in flight at the rookery.

11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?
I do not have any lighting equipment or flashes.

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
I am a scuba diver, so I would spend all my time in the water. I would love to get a housing for my camera or a camera that doesn't need a housing to get some fabulous underwater shots.

13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?
One hilarious story happened last fall. I was with a couple friends at an outdoor fall festival. I saw a praying mantis and started taking photos---real close up. Apparently he felt challenged and reared up on his hind legs, waving his front legs at me. I still shot more photos. Then he climbed up my face and sat on my head!!! My friend got a photo of him on my head.

14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
I don't have a website. (You can come to my art showing later this year. A small shop downtown has a gallery wall and features a different artist every month. She asked to see some of my photos, liked them and so I am going to be featured later this year---first time ever!! I am excited!)

15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
Just go for it!! Follow your heart's desire and to heck with what anyone else says. I was the only one in my family with any interest in photography. While everyone else was in a hurry to go here and there, I was stopping to take a photograph. Constantly heard, "hurry up, you're lagging behind, c'mon, what are you stopping now for" But they are the ones who missed out on seeing a pretty little flower on the edge of the trail, or a unique fungi, or the butterfly or the clouds. Do not let another's opinion influence your subject matter. Take the photo you like.
