we just took a card from the SX50 into costco to have prints made. when we put the card in the machine it said the images were to low a resolution for a 4x6. they were shot at large fine jpg. why is it saying low res?
the images are only about 2 to 5mb in size. why are they so small?
I shot 1 shot in RAW but cannot open it in cs5 or lightroom 3. where can I download plugins to open in CS5 and lightroom? I know I can open it in DPP, I am not familiar with DPP and I would rather use lightroom and photoshop

thanks

If my understanding the first part is correct, did you press the "function set" button and set the resolution to "L"? Page 74 in the manual. Also in the "function set" menu did you set the aspect ratio to 4.3?

I have no idea what would cause the OP's problem, but the aspect ratio would not be at fault, just would give a slightly different formatted crop.
Actually the 3:2 ratio would be more ideal for using 4x6 prints then the 4:3 ratio.

yes, the resolution was set to L. and yes it was set to 4.3 aspect ratio.

update: I need a plugin of 7.3 or higher to open in Photoshop. I am not sure if I can do that with CS5.
Lightroom 3 will not open raw files from SX50. it need to be version 4.3 or higher.
but I still don't understand why I cant shoot JPG and take the card out of the camera and have prints made.

Might try louelke's suggestion and go to 3:2. I'm fairly new at the SX50 myself. Had it since January.

thanks bparr1. I have been researching the web for answers. I found out I will have to use DPP if I want to shoot RAW, or update my software and possibly my computers. thats not going to happen anytime soon!
I did switch to large super fine rather then fine jpg. I will go out and shot a few shots and see how it works.

That interesting that the machine is setup that way. I've not seen a printer reject anything that I send to it. I wouldn't think that you have done anything wrong to be able to print on the Costco machine. Does Costco publish instructions?

Have you looked at the images on the computer??
The JPG size the way should be 4000X3000 pixels, which will give you a 10x13.33 inch print @ 300PPI, so almost twice the size needed for an 4x6 print.
Are you sure there wasn't something wrong with the machine at Costco

This might help - possibly....

a) After you switch on your camera, Press the Function Set button on your camera that's at the center of the wheel.
b) Go to the tab where you select the size at which you want to shoot - L (Large) or M (Medium) or S (Small)
c) When you press the Display button of the camera now, you get an option to capture pictures in Superfine(sL) that will be Bigger and Better.

Get the SX50 into the Superfine mode...

In P MODE
press FUNC SET (THE MIDDLE BUTTON)
GO DOWN TO L and hit DISP (just under the big round dial)
Now you will see the two options for jpg (Super Fine and Normal)
Do the same in C1 and C2 but saving your set up as per your needs

Canon provides image management software which I think lets you view RAW files - you can download the software from their website:

Even 2 MB to 5 MB is way more than enough for a 4x6 print. Sounds like an issue with Costco's equipment or it was trying to order posters :)

Can you upload an image to this thread and click "store original?"

To answer your question re the file sizes, since the camera is 12 mega-pixel, a jpg is often within that 2 - 5 MB size, especially if not a highly detailed image. I have many of that size.

You can also view the SX50 raw files in Picasa. Very easy to edit there, but don't go to raw "just" for the issue you mention here. This was nothing to do with the camera if you're seeing 2 - 5 MB results.

You can get Picasa free at http://picasa.google.com

One last thing: you can see what your settings are by viewing the LCD screen. It can be set up to show you certain data when you shoot, but also try this: when viewing an image on playback, after shooting, keep hitting the display button. You'll get one screen showing you all kinds of data.

I am not sure what is causing your low res issue. Open them in CS5 and look at the file size. As far the RAW issue simply go to Adobe's website and download the free DNG (digital negative) converter. Convert the CR2 files to DNG and then they will open in CS5. You don't need to spend money on any other software.
