I spent the last six years of my career as a safety officer, and my grad degree is in safety, homeland security and emergency management. Some of these photos I've seen before. . . safety pros love to send these to their safety colleagues. Some of these are shot in foreign countries (though international borders are meaningless when it comes to stupidity). OSHA's reach is limited. . . although for all the howling by the Chamber of Commerce (their mortal enemy), and the Manufacturer's Association, OSHA actually does prevent a lot of injuries and fatalities. . . that's what the research shows. But the organization has been leaderless since the Bush administration, which effectively castrated OSHA, and I think the only new standard that's been issued in 13 years was ordered by a federal court. Workers are consumables. Safety doesn't pay if there's no accountability.

Thanks for the laughs. The majority of my life has been spent in safety and unfortunately things pictured above go on daily. I've seen a obvious decrease in risk taking on the job, but it hasn't stopped. Most of the time when I've found safety issues, they were a result of people not knowing the rules. Sometimes the deadliest hazards are subtle safety violations.

Hi bcheary, once again you've got me shooting coffee on the keyboard. Oh well, it wipes off.

I spent the last six years of my career as a safet... (show quote)

That is a shame and it also drives the Workman's Comp. Insurance up. As a former small business owner I know that first hand.

Obviously, more safety labels are needed; especially for ladders.

I had a guy that worked where I was the safety officer. He had 3 lost-time injuries over the course of four years. I went to my office one day, and there was a step ladder in front of my office. Someone was standing on the top of the ladder, working above the false ceiling. Guess who it was? Standing two rungs above the sign on the ladder "do not stand above this rung". I called him down and asked him to leave after making note of his 3 lost-time injuries. He filed a union grievance against me. . . claiming I had grabbed him and thrown him against the wall. (I'm 5'4" and weigh about 135# and I was a Commander at the time). There were witnesses, but no disciplinary action was taken against him. Sigh. The US Government.
