My brother and I had brought one like that. A IDE/SATA to USB 3.0. His old computer burned out but SATA hard drives where still good. Works great for $30.00 There are cheaper ones out there this one works with laptop drives as well.

SATA/IDE Drives are fantastic. I have a couple old IDE Drives that are stored in a drawer. One is for photos and one holds every program I've downloaded from internet. If I see someone throwing out a computer, I ask if I can just take the hard drive and insure them I will delete and wipe the hard drive before using it. I even offer to come back and do it in front of them using my laptop and the IDE/SATA unit.

A company I was working for last year was throwing 7 laptops in the dumpster. I saw our janitor heading to the dumpster with them on a hand truck. I asked him to hold up and went and asked the company owner if I could have them and he said sure. They didn't bother to wipe the drives. Some interesting stuff on there concerning billing and foreign contracts. I started gutting them after formatting the drives. I was able to use the hard drives and memory.

Did you pass on the info about the hard drives and the possibly sensitive info on the hard drives to your company owner ?

Indirectly. I talked to one of his IT guys and told him I'd wipe the drives. Didn't want to get the kid in trouble with the big boss man. A few days later the owner thanked me for pointing it out.
