BREAKING: Emails Show Lois Lerner Fed True the Vote Tax Information to Democrat Elijah Cummings

Article by; / Katie Pavlich | Apr 09, 2014

New IRS emails released by the House Oversight Committee show staff working for Democratic Ranking Member Elijah Cummings communicated with the IRS multiple times between 2012 and 2013 about voter fraud prevention group True the Vote. True the Vote was targeted by the IRS after applying for tax exempt status more than two years ago. Further, information shows the IRS and Cummings' staff asked for nearly identical information from True the Vote President Catherine Engelbrecht about her organization, indicating coordination and improper sharing of confidential taxpayer information.

Chairman of the House Oversight Committee Darrell Issa, along with five Subcommittee Chairmen are demanding Cummings provide an explanation for the staff inquiries to the IRS about True the Vote and for his denial that his staff ever contacted the IRS about the group.

“Although you have previously denied that your staff made inquiries to the IRS about conservative organization True the Vote that may have led to additional agency scrutiny, communication records between your staff and IRS officials – which you did not disclose to Majority Members or staff – indicates otherwise,” the letter to Cummings states. “As the Committee is scheduled to consider a resolution holding Ms. Lerner, a participant in responding to your communications that you failed to disclose, in contempt of Congress, you have an obligation to fully explain your staff’s undisclosed contacts with the IRS.”

The first contact between the IRS and Cummings' staffers about True the Vote happened in August 2012. In January 2013, staff asked for more information from the IRS about the group. Former head of tax exempt groups at the IRS Lois Lerner went out of her way to try and get information to Cummings' office.The information Cummings received was not shared with Majority Members on the Committee.

On January 28, three days after staffers requested more information, Lerner wrote an email to her deputy Holly Paz, who has since been put on administrative leave, asking, “Did we find anything?” Paz responded immediately by saying information had not been found yet, to which Lerner replied, “Thanks, check tomorrow please.”

On January 31, Paz sent True the Vote's 990 forms to Cumming's staff.

Up until this point, Rep. Cummings has denied his staff ever contacted the IRS about True the Vote and their activities during Oversight hearings. In fact, on February 6, 2014 during a Subcommittee hearing where Engelbrecht testified, Cummings vehemently denied having any contact or coordination in targeting True the Vote when attorney Cleta Mitchell, who is representing the group, indicated staff on the Committee had been involved in communication with the IRS. This was the exchange:

Ms. Mitchell: We want to get to the bottom of how these coincidences happened, and we’re going to try to figure out whether any – if there was any staff of this committee that might have been involved in putting True the Vote on the radar screen of some of these Federal agencies. We don’t know that, but we – we’re going to do everything we can do to try to get to the bottom of how did this all happen.

Mr. Cummings. Will the gentleman yield?

Mr. Meadows. Yes.

Mr. Cummings. I want to thank the gentleman for his courtesy. What she just said is absolutely incorrect and not true.
After the hearing, Engelbrecht filed an ethics complaint against Cummings for his targeting and intimidation of her organization.

Rep. Cummings has described the investigation into IRS targeting of conservative groups as a "witch hunt," and has tried multiple times to put the investigation on hold.

"These documents, indicating involvement of IRS officials at the center of the targeting scandal responding to your requests, raise serious questions about your actions and motivations for trying to bring this investigation to a premature end. If the Committee, as you publicly suggested in June 2013,'wrap[ped] this case up and moved on' at that time, the Committee may have never seen documents raising questions about your possible coordination with the IRS in communications that excluded the Committee Majority," the letter sent by Issa and the Chairmen further states. "As the Committee continues to investigate the IRS's wrongdoing and to gather all relevant testimonial and documentary evidence, the American people deserve to know the full truth. They deserve to know why the Ranking Member and Minority staff of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform surreptitiously contacted the IRS about an individual organization without informing the Majority Staff and even failed to disclose the contact after it became an issue during a subcommittee proceeding...We ask that you explain the full extent of you and your staff's communications with the IRS and why you chose to keep communications with the IRS from Majority Members and staff even after it became a subject of controversy."

The House Oversight Committee will vote tomorrow about whether to hold Lerner in contempt of Congress.
End of article;

Comments;

Rep. Cummings has described the investigation into IRS targeting of conservative groups as a "witch hunt," and has tried multiple times to put the investigation on hold.

Sure he has! Because HE's "the witch", and he knows that what he's already done is a crime; before this whole thing is over with, Elijah Cummings is either going to be, #1. out of Congress, #2. in jail, or #3. both of the above;

(I'll vote for "both of the above" )

Elijah Cummings (prediction; this POS is in HOT Water!)

Would posting to One Political Plaza - Home of Politics be more to your liking?

It's called "General Chit-Chat (Non-photography talk). All the photography discussion seems to be confined to the other sections. I guess if the battles in this section bother folks, then maybe they shouldn't open the topic? It's the same with radio/TV.....You don't like MSNBC, or Fox News, or political talk radio, don't watch or listen. Pretty simple, really!

Personally I do not understand posting political topics to a photography forum for why are you here if not for photography, but in the end you may press your agenda if you like. I was just asking.

Don't get me wrong. Being an amateur photographer, I enjoy this forum for it's photography information. I am also very concerned about what's happening to my country. I'm sorry if that makes folks uncomfortable.

We should all be concerned about what happens, but is this really the site you want to rely upon your news for where it is distilled and presented as needed? There are biases here and if this is the only site you gather news from you will see a filtered view rather than one there all opinions matter.

If you would, take a look at the site presented and see if it doesn't make more sense to see all the perspectives rather than just the one. Being a photographer you should understand that.

St3v3M;

As I'm sure you are already aware, this website has a "whole bunch" of photography related forums; some people may like to discuss photography, 24-7, 365; If they do...I'm happy for them, as UHH is a great place to do it!

However, as I'm also sure you must realize, many people like to discuss all sorts of "other topics"; which is exactly why the folks who own this website very wisely decided to create ONE forum, ( General Chit-Chat ), for discussing "everything else".

Now.....I'm also assuming that anyone who has made as many posts as you have, is obviously very aware of all of the great features that the people who designed the software for UHH have provided for the members, in order to "keep track" of the "threads", "topics", or whatever you choose to call them.

I personally check "my topics" several times each day as a rule; as I'm sure you must know, all websites are dependent on advertising revenue; and ALL advertisers (who are paying significant sums for their ads ), are expecting "big numbers" (lots of "views" ) With the diversity of interests and opinions represented by all of the members of this website, I'm sure you can see why it's to the advantage of not only the owners of the website, but also to all of the advertisers, to always keep expanding the membership, and in so doing, to keep adding new members all the time. It isn't possible to do these things with only one forum, or even a half dozen forums.

As I mentioned before, I pay close attention to how many "views" each topic I post receives, and also how many replies that topic gets; some topics get a lot of "views", some topics get a lot of replies, and some get a lot of "both"; that tells me what members are interested in reading.

I can assure you, there is a LOT of "interest" in discussing "politics" (and other things ), and the several hundred thousand "views" that my posts have generated clearly indicates this. (if you have any ideas on how best to "discourage" the radical "secular-progressive-liberals" from calling all of the peaceful, mild-mannered, Conservative "normal people" nasty names and constantly hurling insults, I would LOVE to hear them, BTW! )

When you mention, Quote; "I do not understand posting political topics to a photography forum"; I NEVER post anything (other than photography related posts ) on ANY of the photography related forums; on the single occasion that I DID forget to click on the "Chit-Chat" button, and my topic went to the "General Photography" forum, being unable to delete it myself, I immediately PM'd the Admin, and he moved it to the Chit-Chat forum within just a few minutes. I might add, during those few minutes, several members on the photography forum, (who are apparently "perfect" and never "make mistakes or typos" ), nearly had heart attacks, and called me many "colorful" names.

I think a good way to understand all of this, is to look at, say Wal-Mart; not so terribly long ago, people bought a "few things" at MANY "small stores"; things are quite different now........now ALL of those people (and quite a few more as well ), buy "many more things" at ONE "great big store".......(and I'm sure you can see how well Wal-Mart is doing! )

So far, I can't think of a single reason why anyone discussing "anything" on the Chit-Chat forum is having ANY negative effect on anyone, on any of the many photography forums. I hope this helps, and thank you for your interest.

As you realize you are free to do as you wish. All I was suggesting is that you might find it more appropriate to post political topics to a political forum where like minded people can talk about like minded topics.

I am simple that way. If I want to talk about music I do so on a music forum and if cars on a car forum, but you get the point, and that is me. Steve

Steve........You're ignoring everything I told you! Why do keep insisting that "this is a photography forum"? sure it is......on every one of it's photography forums! But this isn't one of them! This forum is for......"Chit-Chat"

And you are sill ignoring why people START websites in the first place; do you think the owners of UHH started this website just so people will have some place to talk about "this and that", because they feel sorry for you? They start websites for exactly the reasons that sponsors pay $500,000 for a 30 second "spot" during the Super Bowl.......to "sell stuff"! To "make money"! Haven't you ever noticed all of the "advertisements" on UHH ? (and on every other website )

For every 10 people who only like to talk about cameras and taking pictures, there are about 5,000 that like to talk about "everything else".......which is why UHH gave us "Chit-Chat"; Think about this; does anyone "order anyone to read any particular person's posts? Has anyone ever said you can't create a new topic about anything you choose? This website is by far and away, the best "forum-oriented" website on the whole internet.......they allow people to say what they want to, and to post what they want to. And think about this........how long do you think ANY particular "thread" lasts? I'll tell you how long.......about ONE DAY.......if no one responds to it! On the other hand, if 100 people respond to it, it may last for a month! Very few threads ever get 100 replies;

Ask yourself this; how do you suppose potential advertisers "choose" which websites to PAY to carry their adverts? They look at the "numbers"......they watch how many members a website has, and whether the membership is "increasing" or "declining"; Wouldn't you, if you were going to pay "big bucks" for a service?

I'll tell you when I'll quit posting on UHH; immediately if not sooner, if Admin tells me he doesn't like my posts, ......OR........the very next day if (and when ) people quit "viewing" and / or replying to the posts that I've made.

It may surprise a few people on UHH, (which is just fine with me, BTW ), but I have photography on three different websites, in addition to one "photo-hosting" site; and I very rarely ever visit those websites to ask or to answer questions.

Something else; trolls; every website on the internet has them; many of them are PAID! There are MANY trolls on UHH; whether they are "pros" (being paid ) is anyone's guess; I think many of the trolls on here are just disgruntled libs, and "wannabees", but they can put a website out of business; (for thew same reason that bar owners don't allow "fighting"....it's "bad for business"; ) (trolls are bad for business also )

All I was doing was suggesting a more appropriate place to use your voice, where your thoughts and input could be heard by a bigger audience on a site identical to this one run by the same owners.

Bless you whatever you decide. Steve

Bless you too, Steve! You sound like a really nice person, and I hope I haven't come across like a rude, crude, guy.
BTW.......I'm on that site also, but in "incognito".......(and they have their fools just like UHH does. )

Getting back to the lying and conniving Cummins - I hope he goes to jail for a long time. He made an ass of himself and now we know why he was having a conniption fit and trying to get the hearings shut down. This is probably only the tip of the iceberg and the heart of it is at the very top of the occupation force.
