I have a Mac, I use iphoto for my pictures. I have had a trial for Aperture, not too impressed. Who owns a Mac and can advise me the best program to buy-----PS, Lightroom, etc.

I can't really advice you since the only thing I have ever used is photoshop elements, but I can tell you that I like it. It does take a bit to learn, but so will anything else.

If you have it in your budget go with CS5, followed by LR then Elements.

I would seldom disagree with MWAC. but in this case I think steering newer folks to CS5 is not the best advice. If you do not like Aperture, you might not like Lightroom either as they are relatively similar in concept. Aperture seems a bit less modular, but that is an interface difference.
While I am not an Aperture user - I know those who are seem to really like it, so it might be instructive if you told us what you do not like.
Elements seems like a decent starting point and I think you will know if and when you outgrow it and want to spend $700 on CS5 or 6 or whatever it is up to.

Hi Captain, as a novice, and I think I have "gotten all I can get" from the iphoto app., maybe I should just go in increments and purchase aperture which is more in my budget. And then once I have learned that and want to go further, then investigate the others? It's not like i make a living through photography. But I'm one of those trial and error people rather than read too much of a manual. So working with an apple product, I may stay comfortable for a while???? I've only had aperture for a trial but it seems to be pretty much like the one I use except for the "wacky" things you can now do with a photo. Sorry, I don't have the language yet of photography. Cindy

See I forget as I come from a techie background so learning CS5 wasn't that big of a deal for me.

Hi Cindy
I have been using Aperture for about a year now. It does just about everything I need. You can get it through the App store for $75. There are a lot of plug-ins now you can get for it. I have not gotten any yet, but am starting to read up on them to see what they are and if they will be of use. Aperture is pretty easy to use, just like your Apple computer. Seems like they did a good job as far as work flow and how easy it is to work with. I am still finding new things to play with.

Aperture is actually pretty easy to use with some practice. I went to Youtube.com and type in any questions I had to get the ball rolling. Great tutorials you can play dozen of times, like I did. I'm not the sharpest knife in the draw when it comes to computers. I was both new to Mac and aperture at the same time. It can't create miracles but everything I shoot within reason can be corrected with aperture, not to mention I spend more time shooting than trying to figure out software.

I did the one month trial but found I didn't have enough time to try it with all the features. I think I will go the with this app and move slowly. Thank you so much.

Yikes, Mac and aperture at the same time. I've only ever used a Mac----since 1995! You are right, I spend more time taking pictures than trying to make them into semi perfect pictures, I don't need anything fancy for now so think I will stick with aperture. I've included a picture I did in aperture with the trial use. What do you think? No eyes on the dog as black wet hair covered them. It was at sunset so the water was really golden.

That's a very good shoot! Maybe a little to much contrast.

Yes, did you add a lot of contrast and sharpening? Do you have the original? If you can post it we could play with it a little.
It is mostly the water not looking natural that I don't like.
