160th Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race

This small Island of ours has many great traditions,including one of the worlds oldest sporting competitions the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race.This annual contest between the two rowing crews from these universities, first contested in 1829,it involves a four and quarter mile race on the river Thames.
The results are seventy seven wins for Oxford and eighty one to Cambridge with one draw. Oxford won this years race after a Cambridge crew mamber almost fell out of his boat
The rowers who come from all over the world but must be students a either university, train for th ree hours a day in addition to their normal studies and there is NO silver medal the losers get nothing.
This event whilst I am sure is unknown to many hoggers, It will be known by some and I am sure a few have seen it live or even taken part.

Thanks for the post.
As you say, it may not be well known to the rest of the world though it is part of our sporting tradition in the UK. I was there yesterday on the banks of the Thames and took a few shots though I'm not sure they're worthy enough to post here. The conditions for photography were not good, the light was drawing in as it was getting quite late and the weather was dull, murky and wet.

I, being from the Rowing Area of Southern Illinois, Am familiar with the race and other races of the same type...
But I do have a question for you .... Do you think that any of the rowers have any time for you.....????

Maybe at this level. I am from Peterborough Cambs and we have a rowing club in the city, my only involvement with it is I regularly walk around the area and occasionally take a few photographs and the club is full of normal everyday people from all walks of life.
They are encouraging kids from all over the city to get out and do some exercise lats Saturday there was approximately 50-60 young people out on the water enjoying themselves.
So well done the bunch of toffs for that.

see how well the children enjoy growing up without a future because the likes of that lot go into banking / goverment etc and mess it all up for ordinary folk, see if you feel the same in ten years time when the uk will be on its knees

My Post on the Boat Race was for the tradition and not the personnel.
My fellow hoggers may be right when the say they they are Toffs and I am sure, as they do not know me , that they do not care about my aches and pains but, there are good and bad in all groups including dare I say my fellow hoggers.but as I am unlikely to meet any of the rowers .I in turn couldn't care less about them as individuals, life is too short.
My reasons for posting the topic was to enter into the spirit of this website by taking part and with a topic outside of what appears to be the sites main topics American Politics,American Gun Culture and the Canon V Nikon debate, these are fine discussions in themselves, it is just that I have nothing to contribute to them, My next post may well be about the Traditional British Pantomime !!
