I currently own a Nikon D80 which I've had for several years. I would like to up grade. My heart is with the D7000. but my pocket book is with the D5100. The two main considerations are: weight & cost. Any input on the D5100 that would encourage or discourage me from purchasing?

IMHO I believe the D5100 would be a step backward in features and quality from your D80. The D7000, that I own, is the state of the art DSLR on the market. All your D80 lenses should work fine since both are DX cameras. At $1200 I considered the D7000 body a bargain and I moved up from a D90.

D7000 / Closer to pro level features... my choice goes to the D7000.

My life has become a dream with my D7000 purchased in January. It has added so much with live view when attached to my telescope. Mt HDR is much easier with a wired remote that shoots brakets with one press of the shutter release. And two IR sensors (front and back) make my other remote more useful. Etc. Etc. And the new book by Darrel Young Mastering the Nikon D7000 makes using the camera a lifetime adventure that will not go obsolete for a long time. I still use my D70 for backup but not much.

I myself and going thru the same dillema and have decided to wait it out and try for a 7000 come closer to black friday sales. The main reasons for me:
1. weatherproof, i live on the coast, salty humid air and should last longer since it is much sturdier.
2. internal focus motor, can use any lenses
3. the U1 and U2 buttons. i think i will have a better time if i can preset at least 2 camera modes.
4. and i really like the 2 card reader holder capacity.
