just discovered Back Button Focus, think the concept is great idea, but is there any down sides to this ?

Basically is it ok to use for all occasions ?

I saw some comments about BBF on this forum. I tried it and haven't gone back. It takes getting used to, but it offers another level of control. This is another reason that drew my interest to a good DSLR; having more control over the picture capture process in the camera.

I use it 99% of the time. Once in a while I'll switch depending on the situation. I do have to remind hubby and any one else that wants a pix of me, that you focus using this button.

For faster action I make sure the camera is in the constant focus mode and keep my thumb on the BBF button all the time and that seems to work quite well.

Once I got used to it, it became the most natural way to focus. I use it almost exclusively.

I never use it.
You need the thumb for other things and the shutter release button will do the same thing when you hold it half way down. IMO it just complicates taking the picture. You can take care of auto focus and shutter release with one finger, why use two?

Its very useful for recomposition and full time manual focus. If you're not comfortable using it or don't see the advantage, than don't. But clearly, many of use it and find it worthwhile. I use it 50% of the time.

I have recently converted over to see how it works out. So far, It seems OK, but it is a pain when shooting in vertical. When I have to focus with the same finger that I am choosing where the focus point in the frame should be. My thumb has to go back and forth from the focus point navigator to the back focus which consumes extra time while shooting.

I think I will probably go back to what I was doing before. If you always shoot horizontal, you will be ok.

I Like some of the concepts, however as a tri-focal wearer, my thumb interferes with my glasses.

One thing I like about BBF (and I thank the folks at UHH for the idea of using it) is that I sometimes shoot so fast I don't get a good focus and with the BBF I am being more consistent.

I wear glasses as well and I don't see any interference. What camera body are you using? If its a small Nikon or Canon Rebel, then maybe I can see the possibility, but then I would think your glasses would interfere with any thumb movement on the back of your camera.

BBF seems so natural to use. Sure their may be some small problems to overcome, but they are very minor. I had a person take some photo's and all I had to do was show him which button to press to focus, no problems.

Yea glasses here too. On top of that I use my left eye since my right eye has some issues.
