I have been lurking a long time, but today I need my fellow Hog's help...I love this photo of our Golden Pheasant, Shakespeare, but I don't know how to get rid of the fence. I have Lightroom and NIK. Can you help me? I hope I have this posted correctly....Thanks.....

Once you have eliminated the background, this same procedure can be used to add any new background.

In the snip below, I am showing how I used a selection tool in PSE 12 to select the rooster (HANDSOME fellow, btw!) and then chose inverse so that everything but the bird was selected. Then did a fill of color. But you can also insert the fellow into another photo with copy/paste and such.

If you'd like someone to paste him into another photo of yours, you could upload that, or let us know what color you'd like as background.

(edit - after reading Searcher's post, I changed my comments so as not to suggest that Lightroom has the tools :) )

Lightroom is definitely not the program of choice for this exercise.

I think I spent at least 30 minutes using the brush and still nowhere near finished. Any program capable of using selections and layers will make mincemeat of this, but not LR.

I have no idea about Nik software.

Maybe I should not have mentioned mincemeat.

I've been chasing this thread from Main to Gallery to Post. You're hard to catch up with!

I don't think you can eliminate the background in LR and I don't know anything about NIK. I use PS Elements, same as Linda, but the same can be done with GIMP which is free.

I couldn't find a suitable background for Shakespeare, so I used a random picture and blurred it out.

Color's much better in the download version.

Ah Searcher...You are so right Lightroom5 is not the answer. I did the same thing only darker...looks terrible ....Linda from Maine, that's what I would like to do, but don't have the program. I looked for a photo of straw, but I don't have that either. If I could just make the background really, really fuzzy, would that work? Thanks

Thanks! It's like everyone said, it takes the right programs. This was really about 5 minutes with Elements and Topaz Remask plugin. Have fun!

Others will be able to do a better job than I, but is this more what you had in mind?

(ah - while I was working on this, you said you liked OddJobber's - and so do I - lol. I'll leave it up anyway.)

This again was Lightroom, and took just a few minutes.

I have responded under the assumption that you only have Lightroom and Nik software, and no access to Elements etc.

You can see from the other posters how much a photo can be easily enhanced, and you don't have to spend shedloads of money. GIMP is easily capable and is free.

Help, advice and tutorials are always available. LR is my favourite graphics program, but like everything, has its limitations.
