Contentment in simplicity

This struck me as a fine shot. The photo captures the flame well, not easily accomplished. The photographer must have paid attention to the tips for candlelight photography. My opinion, which may be a minority of one, is that it didn't win first place because of the candle itself. My taste leaned toward the traditional candle, the simple candle, the candle stick ... enhanced by the artistic vision of the photographer. These contests come down to subjective judgement. The technical aspects may be perfect; but the artistic aspects need to win the heart.
I absolutely loved this shot and voted for it! What I like about it is the visual symmetry it exudes. The natural glow of the wax is not overpowered by the flame and the translucence is eye catching. The secondary candle to the right is a little distracting, but not enough to ruin the shot.

Tough shot. No way to get the candle and the flame exposed properly so its a trade off. I'm not a big fan of subjects exactly centered in a picture. What is that behind the candle? Looks like another candle and this distracts my eye. The pattern in the candle is captured beautifully but there are just too many things I don't like.

That second candle must go. The gradations of tone make this candle so pretty. I like the almost blown-out white of the flame. Makes me squint as would a real flame do. I wonder if the composition would benefit from more black space above the candle.
The edges should be sharper. The softness is a distraction.
