I hang pictures mostly on walls. Good ones I may frame and find a good spot for them. So-so pictures end up in our workout room on a wall that is covered with cork. I change the cork mounted ones from time-to-time. My wife complains that I produce too many to keep around. I'm thinking of hanging her on the wall too.

Have some of mine in a gallery and the rest are in portfolios. I don't have any on the walls as my walls are literally covered with wildlife prints. I have a few in frames in my "Cave" but they're just sitting on the old rocker, none on the wall. So I guess the only ones hanging are those in the gallery. Will also do some events this summer where I show off my work and hopefully sell a few framed prints..........

My best photo is hung in the Loo. most guests visit there and can spend an extra few minutes looking without feeling nosey...other pictures get stood or propped up all over

I also hang pictures on the long wall of the stairs.

if you cut a strip of thin plywood 2 inch wide by 4 or 6 foot - drill rgular holes down the centre line - you can screw it to the wall at the top (only) and hang the pictures to the strip using a a piece of stiff wire like a butchers hook S. ergo one hole in the wall plus many pictures hanging....if you paint the wood the same as the wall it almost disappears. by setting the distance between strips to twice + a little the width of your biggest frame you can add any picture anywhere to suit without ever moving the strips. You can also add another strip at the bottom if you have huge ceiling heights.

I have framed family portraits on a wall. Also have canvas landscapes hanging on walls. Family snapshots in a multi-picture frame on an end table. Living in the US West, my landscapes tend to be of the west.

Like everyone else, I use the wall. But in one area I put up a museum or art gallery system that makes hanging and changing pictures easy. http://gallerysystem.com/?gclid=CLrv-tOgyr0CFc1afgod5gIAZQ

I also have an online gallery so I can show or share photos anytime I want with my computer, tablet or phone. I use Zenfolio for that. http://theisaacbergallery.zenfolio.com/

I bought two old windows from an old house and hung them in the hallway. They still have the glass in them and big enough to mount 8X10 prints. I mounted them horizontally. If you like the old look you will like this idea.

I have an idea that worked for me (but for a different reason). When I was in college, they closed the dorms for repairs over a week. My roommate and I got some theme books and went into Dallas. We went into Hunt Oil and told the receptionist that we were doing a study of the art and photographs that people had on the walls and desks in all the different kinds of offices (bosses, steno pools, computer rooms, etc.) We got shown around through the whole building - and actually did take notes to do a paper, later. Mr. Hunt got wind of the fact that we were there, and took us to dinner, then to his ranch, drove us to the outlying office buildings, etc. He mainly escorted us around Dallas the whole weekend, but in the process, we also learned a ton of information about what kind of pictures and artwork is used in the different parts of a business. So, instead of asking us that question, you might just want to walk into a few select businesses that you are interested in doing photo work for and let them know that you're doing research on it - you very well might make some customers in the process.

I'll be right up front: this is a bit of market survey work.

I'm looking for information about where people and organizations display photographs. Note: this is about physical prints, not digitally displayed images.

What sizes do they want?

Do they hang photographs (vs displaying on a desk or shelf)? Where?

Who buys images in these categories?
General landscapes
Exotic landscapes
Nature (animal and bird) scenes
Portraits
Head shots
Family portraits
Commercial

I'll report the results I get.

To all who contribute, a very special thanks.
To those who don't choose to respond, thanks anyway.

It depends on the venue, the intent, and the viewing distance. Galleries tend towards larger prints (16" x 20" minimum, up to 80" x 100".)

Professional portraits for executives, lawyers, etc, are also in the 16" x 20" to at most 24" x 30" for the boardroom or corner suite.

The greater the viewing distance, the larger the print. And if the print gets into the super-large sizes used for advertizing in malls, you can get into billboard size and no frames.

My experience suggests that 16" x 20" to 24" x 30" framed is the most common size for wall mounted framed photographs.

I used to display photos of family and friends in frames of varying sizes and designs on one shelf of a bookcase and along the top of a living room bureau, most no larger than 5"x7". I also keep a few photos of people on the coffee table. When updating, I leave prior photos in the frames and simply put the newer ones over the old ones. I put them all away one day when I wanted to simplify. Shall re-display some later. Maybe. I use wall space for other artwork, large pieces, not mine and not photographs. I have one of my own images (an ocean scape) framed (8x10)and propped up on the kitchen counter because I want to look at it for awhile until I decide whether to hang it or not. Need more wall space. Haven't bought an image for years, but if I did it would probably be a nature or city scape.
