With the rumor of the Nikon D9300, KotaKrome commented that "Used to be when Nikon or Canon came out with a new model it was a big event. Now they come out with a new one every few months and it's just NOT as exciting as it used to be." That got me thinking about some of the "big events". To sent some boundaries, let's say interchangeable lens cameras since 2004. Sorry, this leaves out the Fuju X100 and all bridge cameras, but it does include medium format.

Here are a few notable releases:
* 2005: Canon 5D, a full frame DSLR under $5k
* 2007: Nikon D3, Nikon jumps in the full frame arena
* 2008: Nikon D90, adds video
* 2008: Canon 5D Mark II, 21mp pro-sumer DSLR and 1080p video, a major asset for independent filmmakers
* 2008: Panasonic Lumix DMC-G1, the first μ4/3 camera
* 2009: Olympus Pen E-P1, Olympus's first μ4/3 camera
* 2012: Nikon D800, 36mp
* 2012: Canon 1DX, new sports camera standard
* 2013: Sony α7/α7R, full-frame mirrorless

I want to include something from Hasselblad and Phase One, but I'm not sure exactly which models. Note the gap between 2008 and 2012 for Canon and Nikon, when the D7000, D3s, and 7D came out, perhaps honorable mentions for the list?

What other cameras qualify as truly exciting releases?

Hopefully this reminds us that we do live in interesting times, as the field of digital photography continues to evolve. I will be curious to see if the next 10 years offers as many groundbreaking releases.

I understand that Nikon even used the Phase One to shoot the photos used to represent the D4 or one of its top releases. I've seen some videos related to Phase One and they're awesome. Def. gotta be a money making camera, though.

Right in between your two 2012 highlights I would've slipped in a humble "Oly OMD em-5 takes world by storm"... 😉

I wanted to put an Olympus μ4/3 camera on the list, but wasn't sure which one made the most sense. I agree that the OM-D E-M5 might be the most exciting release.

Yes, that is an interesting one to consider. But since neither of us can remember which one was first, it might lose some "excitement points".

Well, Pentax introduced a few "tough" (weather sealed) and very affordable DSLR's in that time span. You also did not mentioned any of the Sony FF DSLR's.

I immediately thought of the Oly OMD em 5 also. exciting! raised the bar and set a new higher standard until Oly beat it themselves just recently.

Ok, I think the OM-D E-M5 gets on the list, and maybe the Pen E-P1 gets removed?

There's one completely unbiased vote! :-D

I'll see what other responses come, and then I'll post an updated list.

I think that the DF should be on the list. Old school styling and *gasp* no video! pretty daring, I'd say

Some love it, some hate it. Either way you have to admit it caused quite a stir. Personally, I think it's beautiful.
